Will the price of gas effect your fishing?

    Non political post here.

For me my wife had a job change and I must say was wanting to go to the Mississippi this weekend but gas and launch fee I figure $60 bucks won’t kill me but really hurting quick.

My thoughts are most people will still take that 1 trip or camping trip with the family but stay closer to home otherwise.

Usually around a 15 mile radius for me for fishing. This helps and a smaller outboard that sips gas helps.

So will this effect how far you go or how many times you go fishing this spring/summer?

Again non political if it goes that way admin please delete.

I was at my local DNR meeting last night and we were discussing peoples habits of when/how much they go fishing. Thanks

no. Even at $4+ for non oxy in my boat I only burn 3 or 4 tanks a year. 22 gallon tank = about a hundred per fill = $400 per year. No big deal

I will still go on the trips I have planned. It will cost quite a bit more if things hold or get worse, but I could die tomorrow, so I am living my best life I can now.

For the recreational fisherperson, it is not that much of a hit… for the people who make their living doing it… absolutely it will affect their pricing and maybe even their tactics.

Yes to some fishing and definitely my hunting.

I do a lot of destination type activities- run out to Wyoming or Colorado. Many of those trips are 200-350 gallons of fuel if I have the camper on the truck plus trailer. Occasionally it’s also taking two vehicles.

Our group just got together and discussed out elk hunting plans. Between estimated fuel costs and food nearly doubled, would add about $600 per person. Thinking about not going this year….

I’m leaving tomorrow out west on a trip. Come home then pull the boat to rainy. Then up north for openener. I’m going to say no not effected. I’ll still do my 20 trips this summer and fish locally 3 to 5 times a week.

It wont change my plans. I work all the hours that I do and I am not going to let gas prices change me from doing what I do in my free time.

Fishing? No, it won’t impact me. I live 2 miles from where I do 95% of my fishing outside of a couple trips. I don’t run my boat WOT everywhere I go to fish. It’s shocking how little time difference there is on a 2 mile boat ride with just getting on plane at 25-30mph versus running WOT. The fuel consumption is considerably different though.

For cruising around on the tritoon, we might just adjust how we do things. Marina premium non-oxy fuel will be $6 a gallon. We will fill at the gas station or from the fuel barrels at the buildings more often. The days of being people’s taxi to and from islands and different restaurants on the river will be coming to an end. My wife is notorious for inviting people out and telling them we will run them wherever whenever to fit their schedule. I don’t and won’t ever accept fuel money from the people joining us, but they will adhere to our schedule to minimize back and forth travel.

X2. My buddy and I were just talking about this the other day. He has Three trips planned to Canada this year between June – Sept. He said it does not matter what the gas prices are. He’s going. He said at his age ( 60+ ) he’s not sure how many years he’s got left to go on trips to Canada. I think for the average fishermen gas prices are not going to effect things much at all. For that matter I don’t think that gas prices will effect many things for most people at all. Its kind of sad but unless demand falls a lot then there is not much reason for them to lower the gas price. Gas is like most things. When the price goes up and suppliers realize that consumers will still pay for the product, then there is no reason to lower the price, even if what caused the price increase in the first place goes away.

Gas prices will effect very few for gas in the boat. Driving to distant location might be another story. In 2008 we thought that every boat in the metro area was launching on Pool 4. One of the most fun springs I’ve ever had… but I digress.

I’m planning a trip to Guttenberg in late May via the river. My butt’s already puckering.

If it stays around $4 or lower probably not. If it goes to $5-6+ like some predictions then yes, I probably won’t be getting up to the cabin much.

I’d find other ways to cut back before canceling any trips, but I only really take three per summer and have the secret garage envelope stocked for those.

BTW, if I pass on and you come to my estate sale, buy the fillet knife kit. The knife kit is average at best, but you will enjoy the contents of the case. whistling

No because the tank in my boat has been full for two years with little use. I may actually go more because the last two years have been the least amount I have fished in my lifetime.

Running from Alex to ND a few times per month may become less frequent, maybe cut down on the bi-weekly trips to Otter Tail, but the frequency I am fortunate enough to fish won’t decrease. I view fishing as therapy and that gets categorized in the “necessity” box. Boat buddies will definitely be bringing the beer and ice from now on though.

No. My average 500 mile drive at 14mpg is a $35 difference between gas at $3 and $4. It’s a drop in the bucket compared to everything else. I could pack a sandwich and a few beers in a cooler, skip a restaurant stop, and make that up if it mattered.

No, absolutely no impact. I’ve been waiting 2 years to get back to Canada, so needless to say the price of gas isn’t going to factor in in the slightest.

Besides, gas didn’t go up $4 per gallon, it went up $1.XX a gallon. With 2 boys growing up fast, I’ve got a WAY more valuable commodity to worry about–time!

You can figure out other savings to make up for gas if you need to. But let me know how you’re going to buy more time.

Really, if you can afford a boat and a rig to pull it, the $2.00 per gallon increase won’t affect you much. It affects those below the middle class the most.. you know, the ones that help is on the way for.

Boat gas won’t matter to me but 10mpg with the truck will hurt a little. We normally travel 120-175 miles round trip every Saturday or Sunday during open water season to fish then get something to eat on the way home(5 of us) the going out to eat will change and we may fish some more local lakes but the gas prices won’t affect how often we fish. I always say I drive by lots of good lakes to get to the lakes I like to fish so it may be nice to try some new ones closer to home.

Similar most of my trips are very gas dependent and cost more then the rest of the trip. Paying 600$ for fuel in the past is bad enough when its 1200$ per trip I will be going less.

Only will effect the kiddos tubing. 120hp 2 stroke at low grinding rpms consumes about $100hr at my calculations

Love ya kiddos, but not THAT much.

Not so much for fishing, but for sure the recreational boating fun days on Vermilion, VNP will definitely be taking a hit.

Don’t think I’ll make it up to Kettle Falls this summer.

Yep. My $500 for gas to head north fishing just went up to $1000 per trip. Will be doing less frequent, but longer stays in the future.

Nope. Although the Houseboat gas bill should be a fun one this summer. And I’ll be chipping in more for my buddies expenses. “There’s no dollar sign on peace of mind, this I’ve come to know”

Will still do the cabin as much as we can – can get up there and back on one tank. The fishing boat doesn’t take that much gas, but the Jet Ski does – I told my 14 yr. old he better start earning his gas money now and save up for his summer adventures.

Otherwise, I will keep doing the kayak thing, my boat aspirations will wait at least another year. Maybe for a long time. Would love to have one for the family but simply can’t justify spending what they’re going for knowing that we’d only use it occasionally with boys in sports, etc.

How’d it double when fuel went up 1 dollar

x2 when I sold my old boat, I never imagined I’d go this long without another. But friends with boats, and access to the old red Lund 16′ is enough for me for now. If the market levels off or decreases, I may pull the trigger, and if not I will buy exactly what I want when the time comes, no rush.
