Will using a Micro Swivel hurt my Icefishing Rod’s guides?

So, I see on here that a lot of pro’s or fishing personalities recommend using a micro swivel when fishing to take the line twist out. This is apparently especially important for small jigs which will spin a lot.

The problem is I have rods that are expensive for me (not to many folks though) and I don’t want to ruin their eyelets/guides.

Will using small micro swivels ruin or damage my rod’s guides and eyelets?

    I have #14 micro swivels.

Yes don’t make your leader that long and you shouldn’t have to reel through your guides.

So I can only have like 12″ inches of leader?

When reeling in a fish I don’t ever reel within 2’ of the lure so you could probably get away with 16-18” or so. Don’t need any more than that.

My tip of rod is never close to 12 inches from lure with or without a swivel when landing a fish.
I usually make mine just shorter than length of my rod or lure hook. For storage purposes. But like said you could go as short as 16-18 inches and you will be fine.

Or just wrap your leader around your reel stem and hook the lure on an eyelet. You can run a 30-40” leader with this method without reeling the swivel into your guides.

You can have as long of a leader on your swivel as you want. Just don’t reel that swivel through you guides when fishing. For storage you can slowly guide the swivel through each guide by hand. Then tighten up the line. The swivel should never encounter the guide.

With a lot of newer/custom rod’s going to wire fly guides or even Recoil guides do you think it even matters? The material seems so tough that the swivel wouldn’t even hurt them. Ceramic insert guides different story.

This, though most of my rod guides are all metal with no inserts so they wont get damaged.

    I don’t know, that’s why I posted this question.

I can be more cognizant of not reeling up to my rod tip but my small children definitely do not. lol

Only time I use a swivel on the ice is with a jigging rap . Still catch plenty of panfish on tungstens without one .

Would adding a small bead above swivel help?

I don’t see it doing much damage to fly or recoil guides until that one time when it catches funny and bends or snaps the guide. Recoil guides do snap. I know people who used to flex their recoil guides to quickly knock the ice off them. The epoxy holding the guide cracked and the guide came off the rod. The only time I use swivels on my hard water rod is when I am using snap or jigging raps. I don’t see the need for a swivel for kids with a normal jig.

I add a bead above the swivel in the summer and on some of my ice rods that I know others will be using for this exact purpose.

Agree. Unless your small children are jigging aggressively with large spoons or jigging raps there is no need for a swivel. The vast majority of my ice rods have no swivel.

I don’t think it hurts the guides.
