Maybe this has been discussed before, but why is it not on the left like a car?

Throttle/ tilt controls in the right hand I would guess. Left hand steers.

I guess I thought it was to help counteract the propeller torque. The weight of the body filling the drivers seat helps offset the boat wanting to lean to the left from the motor torque. The same reason a helicopter needs a tail rotor to off set the fuselage from spinning opposite the blade rotation.
