Instagram is an online mobile photo-sharing, video-sharing and social networking service that enables its users to take pictures and videos, and share them on a variety of social networking platforms, such as Facebook, Twitter, Tumblr and Flickr. A distinctive feature is that it confines photos to a square shape, similar to Kodak Instamatic and Polaroid images, in contrast to the 4:3 aspect ratio typically used by mobile device cameras. Users can also apply digital filters to their images. The maximum duration for Instagram videos is 15 seconds.

Who cares about all that crap. One spot to check- in-depthoutdoors.com. Shouldnt you be out fishing/ hunting versus wasting time on those waste of time self-centered, look at me, I went to the can web sites?

Second that… someone has to pay to keep all that crap up. As a consumer, I don’t want to.

Kind of funny you mention the consumer paying for it all. If clam/gentz and co really do have these 8,000 pro-staff blue suit brigade running around do the math. No wonder the quality of there product has gone way down but prices sure aren’t.

Social media has inherit evils, why sidestep and not go directly to the source – otteroutdoors.com? Would you rather have the informed people at otter wasting time on social media or putting out quality products. If those informed people did the later they’d need to hire an uninformed rookie to handle exchanges.

My balance is low enough I can count on my fingers.

You boys are a little fiery this morning! Cole should open his mouth so you all can climb out of his throat! I really like instagram, a lot of awesome hunting and fishing photographers post their media there and it’s a great place to see a lot of people’s stuff.

X2. Like anything else, social media CAN be overdone, but when used appropriately it can also be a great way to share life’s fun experiences!

    To the original question…

Cole, at what point does a company say enough?

I’m speaking for myself here, not Ido or Clam.
I’m on FB, Twitter and Instagram.
My Instagram posts are shared on my FB account and my FB posts are shared on Twitter.

..and the good Ido posts are shared on my FB account by clicking on the “like” button on every post.

If I had to do this with Four Square and all the other social media sites not only would it be time consuming but in many more cases then not, redundant.

Most of my “friends” on FB are Ido members. 99% following me on Twitter are FB friends or visit Ido regularly…I haven’t checked lately but I think all of my Instagram friends are either connected with me on FB or Ido.

For my guiding business over the last 3 or 4 years I can attribute 2 guide trips to FB. Over 85% are linked to Ido.

If there’s a budget (companies do pay for posting) Instagram would be one of the last platforms I would dig into my pocket for.

All of this from my point of view.

I’d have to disagree. I find twitter to be pretty worthless in terms of interesting outdoor content. (Minus BKs) Also, I think instagram is the fastest growing social media platform.

    Ah, good old tinder!! LoL!!!

Tinder is a hook-up site where peeps put pictures up. You swipe right if you like the pic and want to shall we say chat. Swipe left is a to the trash with the persons profile.

Sorry to bring up an old thread, but we do have an instagram account! If you do have instagram installed on your phone, open the app and search @InDepthOutdoors. Or, if you would rather visit the desktop version of our instagram page, simply click here.

Since an old thread came alive, lets keep it going.

Here are my 2 cents if anyone cares.

Both forums (like IDO) and your traditional social media sites are all forms of “social media.” While the actual amount of face to face socialness is often lacking they are social in their information sharing capabilities and connection to people (to a certain degree)

In general, forums are dying to the ease of your standard social media sites because the location of all your interests are in one place.

However, and why I think IDO is king, is that it does something very well that standard social media sites don’t do very well…yet at least. And that is ARCHIVE DATA. I can come on here and easily search for almost any fishing topic I want and begin to learn about it. IDO also has a large fish head following which helps, along with a lot of smart, wise, fishy (in all senses of the word), people constantly contributing.

But IDO is not dumb and they know that businesses that don’t adapt and change with time…die. Hence their focus on complete shows on youtube, and the sharing of their web content now through all the social media sites.

I often here many people, some the older generation, but often time the younger generations say that they hate the “look at me culture” created by social medias. I couldn’t agree with them more. I think a lot of the young young kids (10-20 year olds) on social media don’t understand it and this is how they use social media. Older people do it as well but it is rampant among the younger group. Many of these kids are just to young to understand or they also just see their role models doing it so they think they should too.

However, the people/companys that do social media right and effectively (IMHO) don’t just say, “WHOA look at this big fish I caught on all my expensive gear I am so sweet! [insert pic]” The best pages/social media users TEACH. That is the best way I can describe it. Just as most of us fisherman don’t hire a guide to put us on fish so we can restock our fridge/freezer. If we did, we would just go to the grocery store. You hire that guide to teach you a tactic, a spot, a tip, something you don’t already know.

I would consider myself a heavy user of the big 4 social medias (Facebook, IG, Twitter, and Youtube). I use mainly for fishing knowledge, but also some for personal. I follow pages with content that teaches and try to do the same with my social medias for I MN FISHING. Its true, people like to see big fish and the lastest coolest gear, but I try to produce quality content that teaches, informs, and excites passion for the sport/hobby.

Another key, and where many people/companies miss the boat is it should be a two way interaction with friends/followers. This also helps avoid the look at me culture. Someone asks a q, have time to answer it, have time to engage them. If someone adds there opinion, add yours back and partake in a conversation. Relational, some what real life interactions can still happen over the internet. Its not all bad trendy life sucking bad stuff )

Long read I am sorry, but I do believe social media done right is a very helpful and healthy thing. That and use in moderation ) just like anything….well besides fishing…try to not just fish in moderation )
