why do I see so many 36 volt Minnkota’s for sale

I currently have a basic 24 volt bow mount, and was thinking of up grading to a model that can follow contour and spot lock, I was considering a used unit but I mostly see 36 volt units is there any particular reason for this?

Just a hunch, but probably tournament anglers.

Mine has been bulletproof. Some of the ulterra’s have documented issues but the terrova’s are great.

I am guessing that they are not the newer Quest model for sale and people are just upgrading.

People upgrade, but I’d also assume those 36’s don’t sell as fast as the 12 and 24’s. The only ones wanting 36 is people with boats built for that many batteries.

The Ulterra Quests are very good as well and mine was bulletproff last season as well, There are likely alot of 36 volt motors on the used market because people are going to Quest systems when they can and then sell their older 36 volt motors.

36v are for big boats. Big boat guys buy new and not used. Lol I’m totally guessing but it sounds good

Can’t imagine a life without a 36 volt. That’s me though ! See if the brushless motors change my mind someday .

As mentioned above-new models, different brands, and people moving to cable drive units are all reasons.

I think people with 24v systems are not the type upgrading to the latest and greatest.

If you want contour following, make sure it has ilink. I’ve had it for 6 years and tried it a few times, but didn’t care for it because it isn’t precise enough for me.

I have the brushless Garmin troller on my 18’ tiller and have it rigged with 36 volt lithiums. I’m a believer.

Big boats and the river. Even for a tin boat I’d run a 36V system for anything over 17’.

My Reata is 18’9” and the 36V system won’t move the boat upstream in heavy current. Wish I had a kicker.

Makes total sense. Im still tinkering with that crestliner I picked up from johns buddy. Just have to swap electronics and she’s ready for water. I was debating on going 36v for the river but I have that brand new terrova and lithium batteries so I’ll probably see how they do for me. Obviously I’m no where near as heavy as your rig.

I had a 17’ Lund Pro Fisherman with 80# Terrova. It was good 90% of the time but on spotlock in heavy current it chewed through batteries.

I have a 18 ft crestliner and it’s never been on a river, the old 24 volt power drive was ok but just a hassle using the foot control and trying to fish, auto deploy sounds nice but not sure I really need it, brushless sounds excellent too, more thinking/ learning to do. Thank you for everyones response.

I’m not a guy that believes in buying the latest and greatest but the latest version of the terrova (2017 ? ) onwards was one of my favorite boat upgrades. The spot lock, auto pilot , spot lock jog , speed in turning is all much better then the older versions. Remote is dang handy as well.

The 2024 advanced GPS terrova is the best investment i got in a long time, paired that with 2 100ah 12v lithiums and it’s been fantastic, even in cold rainy river temps. I love that set up.

Out of curiosity – When you say advanced GPS are you referring to a Quest model? I know the Quest model GPS is supposed to be improved GPS over the previous generation but I was not aware (maybe I have not paid attention) that the non Quest models had a upgraded GPS. I just looked at the Minn Kota website and they phrase the GPS descriptions differently between Quest/Non Quest so it is not clear that they changed the GPS on the 2024 models of the non quest series compared to what they were in the 2022, 2023 or when ever they made they previous GPS change.

Now I am curious if there was a actual change on the non Quest series or if this is just Minn Kota marketing confusion.

Honestly I have no idea, I think the advanced GPS terrova was new last year and came with the upgraded remote. I could be wrong. But the box had advanced GPS all over it, and the other terrova next to it did not.

I believe that they have/had 2 remotes but I think that the different remotes previously had more to do with it being a link model or not. I am not sure if they came out with a different remote with the roll out of the Quest series.

Did you buy a Quest model?

No not a question series, I did a little digging. The advanced GPS models came out in 23 with the new remotes. It’s the first minnkota I’ve had that I actually liked.

While on this subject… if anyone has a 36V Ultrex with a 60″ shaft they are looking at getting rid of please reach out. I am in the market.
