I suppose that means I should take the strobies off my boat now?
Mike
I have never seen strobe lights on a fish house thank god. that does sound obnoxious. Isnt the idea of having a light bar on at night so a snowmobile doesn’t come flying through your house? If you are sitting in a fishing hole surrounded by other houses maybe that wouldn’t matter but if I were off on my own and sleeping overnight I would probably want a light on. Of course any old light would do… don’t need a million megawatt light bar….
I just hate how everything is moving to increasingly bright lights in the name of safety. First ice houses put reflective tape on the sides, then maybe incandescent lights, then LEDs, and now strobes. Where does it end? It’s kind of like how bright some police/ambulance/fire trucks lights are now. Some of them are almost LESS safe now because they are so blinding and could cause accidents by drivers having to look into them.
I’ll stick to my smaller, less crowded lakes where I can have some peace and quiet, look up at the stars at night. That’s the reason I go out ice fishing. Get away from all of this crap. Ice fishing has become a sports where all of the crap comes with you and it’s no longer an escape.
OMG. Saw the strobes first hand just driving around garrison. I recant everything. They are ungodfully annoying. I think it’s actually near Twin Pines? You’ll see it drinks on 169.

If you see it then you know what I mean. They are awful
Went out this past weekend and saw a small village of those tools! Why is right. I see no need for a 50′ tall Trump flag with a disco light on top of it.
This thread took a turn.
I have a ton of LEDs on my boat and I also put them on a permanent shack….but they are there for a reason.
A few years ago I almost got rammed at 2am when I was anchored up tight against a rice bed. I was pulling 24 hour muskie fishing session and needed to take a nap. Navigational lights were on and a jerk wad came through wide open and missed me by about 5 feet. For that it was a safety issue and I don’t have them going at all times…but having them on there is great when navigating narrow channels and turning them to purple is a game changer when fishing.
For the shack it was to deter people from breaking into the thing. Tons of LED lights on it wired into a motion switch located inside the door. It’s armed or disarmed by a switch located on the outside of the shack so you can arm it when you leave or disarm it before you go inside. If that motion switch is flipped whoever is there is in for a rude awakening because it draws attention. It’s happened once and the guys who broke in got the heck out of there in a hurry.
I get the safety issues and lights are a good method of protection. I however wouldn’t mount them 50 feet above my shack in the form of a laser light show. Just my opinion.
The safety issue is different. A dim home light could work for that.
Completely different then rigging 20 million candle light led strips to the out side and lighting up a entire city block on the ice to show you have little d syndrome
I had a nice glow coming through my fish house curtains last night. I was positive the sun was coming up early… great post title Bearcat “WHY?????”

That’s a lovely ambiance…..
I know a lot of us here already live in the Land Of 10,000 LAWS…..but I’d love to see just one more added to get rid of those obnoxious things.

Push the alarm button on your truck at 3:00 AM, then again at 4:00 AM.
So terrible. I’d really have a tough time not saying anything.
I like the truck alarm idea. Make sure your parked facing him.
The strobes are a good idea for one thing only, and that’s if you have someone coming out and needing to find you, but then shut the things off. They are annoying as all get out. The LED light strips are excessive in my opinion as well, no need to light up a 40 foot circle around your house. Maybe if picking up and leaving, but not for leaving on from 5pm to midnight and only open the door to grab a beer from the cooler that is 1 foot from your door.

The strobes for “someone finding you” is a complete garbage excuse to have them…..
I don’t buy it.
With technology these days you or I can send a “pin” to within less than 30′.
If you don’t have great data service, a phone call to say take a left at the T and I’ll turn my four-ways on is all that is needed.
If you have zero cell service and tell your buddy ahead of time to come to the shack with the strobes on a 9 p.m., he’ll have to stop at 63 other dip$hits shacks with strobes on before he gets to you…..
Bottom line: Mega-bright LED bars and annoying strobes have almost no purpose or reason to be on the lake. They are a complete eyesore.

In the anecdote I shared above the safety issue was in a boat and my standard navigational lights were on. The ones I have on my boat were brighter than a dim home light. The guy still almost rammed me. I’ve had other close calls as well. Enough was enough. If my boat is anchored I have something extra on. Safety far, far outweighs inconveniencing someone who is annoyed by it.
I have a much bigger issue with people who run docking lights as headlights when their boats are under power. For starters…it’s illegal. You are only to have the standard red/green bow light and the stern light lit when the boat is under power, yet you encounter scores of pontoon boats with docking lights running when they are wide open.
Running them constantly on the outside of a shack would be a bit much…and as stated above, when you have an insane amount of LED lights go off when someone breaks into it people will notice and the hooligans who broke in are going to get the hell out of there as fast as they can. For that purpose they are an incredibly inexpensive theft/vandalism deterrent.

Looks like an alien abduction

So I should have assumed the house was getting robbed? I did notice when the lights came on. Did I think it was just another “look at me” guy with a new fish house? yes. Did I in anyway associate the lights with a break in? sorry I did not…
I do agree with your ideas on summer boat lighting though. You made some great points.

That’s a pretty good idea. I really can’t help if my alarm is set off by bright lights…

Its not a all a garbage excuse to have them for locating a house. I’m talking having them on for like 1 min. If that’s too much for you, I really don’t care. I don’t have them on my house and won’t ever get them, but they do have a purpose. Problem is most people just leave them on non-stop. I think we all agree to that.
If that’s too much for you, I really don’t care.
Why do people”just not care” anymore? We used to be kind, considerate, and respectful to our neighbors. At home or on the lake, I try and avoid anything that might annoy others. Treat others the way you would like them to treat you.
Just read where ice castle was adding a light plant/generator option for 2020..lol
This is in the same boat as loud exhausts, light bars on trucks, and underglow on cars. “It looks cool”. To heck with being considerate, look at me!

Remember, loud pipes saves lives
I’ll play….
My dad has added a strobe to his wheelhouse this year. He fishes LOTW a lot with my uncle. Both of them are 60 yrs old. Both have cell phones but are not very good with them plus spotty reception on LOTW. He does not leave it on all the time, just when somebody is trying to locate the house in the dark.
Another big reason he added it was for our trip up to Winnipeg. We park the house a mile or more off the landing (when snow isn’t an issue). We mark the house with GPS and on the Navionics app on the phone. Sometimes it really sucks trying to find the house in the dark after a 8+ mile ATV ride at the end of the day when its -20 degrees, stopping and taking gloves off to look at a phone. The strobe has a remote with a 1 mile range on it, so when we know we are getting close, he turns the strobe on. Makes the end of the day a little easier.
Turn it on, turn it off. No reason to be on all the time.
