What a beautiful day it is eh?? jester

We’re hunkered down on LOTW, lots of beer left, lots of food left, lots of propane left, four fish in the pail. We were planning on getting home tomorrow, but that might get pushed a day.

I have a couple buddies on Red and it sounds horrible there.

Saw West Wind posted that they won’t be able to get out to anyone until tomorrow afternoon at the earliest. Sounds like some houses may be flooding as well.

i’d have to assume pretty bad if resorts doing roads pulled plows and have told people to stay put until this storm subsides!!!

The storm was bad up on Red. We had a plow set up to get us at 7:30 am on Sunday and the drifts were up to my truck window. It was not fun getting out and we had to dig out and pull the plow truck out multiple times to get out. Once off the lake nothing was plowed and we were going through at least 12” of snow on all the roads. We ended up picking up a convoy of about 10 trucks blazing trails all the way to Bemidji. We caught fish but it was tough. I still know of multiple people stuck on Red.

I pulled off LOW at 1030 sunday, had plenty of fuel and propane but did not want to deal with the mess having the family. I dont think I would have made it had I waited much longer.

Talked to a friend who was up there. It was noon when I talked to him yesterday and he was trying to figure out his best option. He had his son who is in the NG and he absolutely had to report for duty at 8am this morning. They were in a rental out of West Wind.

He text me last night around 8 and said he just got home. Haven’t really talked to him yet but I’m guessing they had to drive themselves off and home. Sure it was a interesting drive home.

We made it off about 10 this morning. Took 45 minutes to shovel a big drift out of the way, but pretty uneventful getting off the lake.

I left the shack up there and bob-tailed home. Glad I did, the roads were a bit gnarly in spots. 46 was ugly as always and 35 turned bad around Hinckley.

We stopped and checked on a guy and his wife on 46. They jack-knifed into the shoulder. If you’re a member here sir, I’m glad you were okay.

My buddies were able to get off Red this afternoon, just as their resort predicted.

Nothing exciting. A couple dinks Friday afternoon, moved deeper Saturday. Kept 11 Saturday and 6 Sunday. Some walleyes but mostly saugers.

I heard it was about 6″ towards Warroad and up to 13″ towards Wheeler’s point.

B-man and others: how bad was the slush? We’re supposed to be taking the wheelhouse to URL this week Thur-Sun but I don’t want to deal with slush I’m hearing of and the possibility of freezing in. If I can convince the wife of driving the extra 75min we may head to Zippel. Downside that’s ~7hrs in the car seats for our kiddos.

No slush where we were at (Zipple)

I know my buddies on Red had water starting to come up yesterday, assuming there will be some possible slush there

My brother in law was on Red since Thursday and was just now able to leave today. He had to leave his wheel house there though, as the snow drift was over top of the house and he couldn’t get it out. He’s worried about leaving it unattended now until he can go back because he lives in Alexandria which isn’t exactly 30 minutes down the road. He claims unattended houses out there are a magnet for thieves and his was broke into once already a few years ago.

46 is almost always the worst part of that drive! We were up on Red the weekend before Christmas, and that was the FIRST time that 46 wasn’t bad for the drive up or the drive home. There is usually a pretty good pucker factor when pulling the house.

When I left LOTW yesterday morning off-road travel was still fine. Not sure if it got any worse or if the drifts got bigger/harder since though.

    I’m headed back up tomorrow.

Thanks all for the update. URL seems like enough of a mess still that we’re likely canning that idea. At this point it’s Zippel or bust. Now to start persuading the wives.

B-man, glad you made it back safely. I am sure Randy filled you in on our trip to LOW last week, we had much better weather. 10-2 were the active times for catching sauger and a few eyes. Nothing fast and furious, but we had a big fish fry and took home a couple of limits. We are heading back up on Jan 8th (Cyrus) to try again with a group of 10. Hope the bite turns on. Plain white hook on the dead stick did well for us up there, hoping to find some active biters while jigging this time. Todd

Was up on LOW Friday & Saturday after Xmas. We left Baudette Saturday night just as the snow was starting to fly. Overall fishing was pretty good as we (3 of us, but one who doesn’t fish much so just dead sticked) caught 85 fish over two days. Probably a 70% Sauger, 30% Walleye mix. All but two fish were 16” or under aside from a 23” walleye and a nice 28” walleye my Nephew reeled in about an hour before we were packing up to leave.

Hey Todd, nice to hear from you. I hope retirement is still treating you nicely, glad to hear that you’re getting on the hardwater.

I’m back up at Zipple, just set the shack down. Missed one right away and had a couple sniffers. Went to bed last night at 10, woke up from excitement and jumped in the truck at 0130 )
