nhammInactiveRobbinsdalePosts: 7348December 29, 2017 at 1:22 pm #1739372One of my best days smallie fishing was -20 windchill in Monticello. River was warm from the discharge so it created this cloud casting into couldn’t even see your lure drop in. Fish were released in the water to avoid damage to eyes so no pics but man, several 18″+ fish in half hour or so. Epic.
Ice fishing in a shelter when cold out, that’s easy peasy.
Dan KanePosts: 90December 29, 2017 at 1:30 pm #1739373I’ll be in the permanent all weekend. Not going to be fun getting it moved to the spot tomorrow. At least there is some snow to bank with.
TumaInactiveFarmington, MNPosts: 1403December 29, 2017 at 2:04 pm #1739387-4 high and -20 low by me. I am not sure what lake I am going to go to but I will head out.
bigpikePosts: 6259December 29, 2017 at 2:04 pm #1739388Going up to TrAshland in the morning. Never ice fished Chequamegon Bay. Should be a fun day!
December 29, 2017 at 3:14 pm #1739404Ill be out on a couple smaller lakes around the Winnie / Bowstring area chasing after some cold-weather crappies and ‘eyes. If you see the Eskimo Sierra Thermal with the guy in the Eskimo Lockout ice suit, stop by and grab a cold (possibly frozen) adult beverage!
December 29, 2017 at 3:28 pm #1739406Hole hopped all day on Mille Lacs yesterday. Had 2 guys roll up on me and asked if I was nuts as I was had clam bibs and a hooded sweatshirt on. My hands were the only thing cold. Bite was ok….
December 29, 2017 at 3:30 pm #1739407I’ll be fishing Mille Lacs tomorrow night in the otter cabin. We’ll be walking out too.
December 29, 2017 at 4:16 pm #1739419Fishing Mille Lacs in the portable. Kinda slow; kinda cold today
December 29, 2017 at 4:56 pm #1739429BigPike,
Are you going with someone who knows the Bay? it is a very treacherous place and not like lake ice at all. Please use extreme caution. ITs very early for safe ice out there. Lake superior usually never freezes over causing ice shifts and currents. The light house breaker wall helps hold the bay together. If are over by The Sioux River it can be dicey. Check with Anglers All in Ashland

December 29, 2017 at 5:59 pm #1739443Nice pics drifter. Couple years ago it said -39 in my truck when we got there and add the 20 plus winds and I have never felt cold like that. You couldn’t open your mouth or your teeth froze. Never had a bad day on UPRL no matter what the temp said.
December 29, 2017 at 6:26 pm #1739446Been hearing ice of Bono Creek is running into the 6″ range currently. Freidns said that they actually could have been using the wheeler, although they didn’t. They did find one area that only had 4-ish inches of ice. Fish were being caught in the proximity of the break to 25′.
Also hearing of peeps walking off the coal docks in Washburn. Will hear back from the peeps I know that fished it today a bit later.
As for around the Minocqua area, my boss guides and has been catching, but it has been better. My family has landed on some crappies after trying 5 different places so far… going to be looking at some other areas as ice now has been forming in real nice fashion.
Area snowmobile clubs are starting to mark the lakes now so lake ice is getting better and is being more consistent, although peeps in the bar today were saying that slush was still an issue on some lakes.

Just don’t follow in Jim Hudson’s footsteps.
hawkguyPosts: 76December 29, 2017 at 7:37 pm #1739460Farm pond tomorrow morning then The Pond on Sunday and Monday.
nhammInactiveRobbinsdalePosts: 7348December 29, 2017 at 8:21 pm #1739466Once upon a time I wouldn’t think twice about going out in a portable. Just as the OP, lindyrig79 said…”I’m going to take a pass. Been there done that…”
I went out in portable last weekend and that was enough, at least in this cold. Next time I get out in a couple short weeks I’ll be driving out to a sleeper house on Mille Lacs.
Some years ago when I was out there it dipped to -30, hardly noticed inside wearing my pajamas.

Going with a co-worker who has been up there many times. We are walking out and he was in touch with a guy who was out today. Thanks for the concern.

Not sure who he is but I generally march to my own footsteps and to the beat of my own drum
MNdrifterPosts: 1671December 29, 2017 at 9:17 pm #1739484Some awesome stuff there drifter!
Thanks. Been a fun week for sure. I’ve been the run/gun hole hopping guy the locals used to follow around. Times and priorities change. Call me getting old/lazy but it’s hard to say which style of fishing was more fun.

When your 6 pack of micro brews are gone at the ML GTG 2017, I’ll give you one, you might like it. Lol.December 29, 2017 at 10:03 pm #1739500<Blue smoothies = Nectar of the gods.

No chance this guy runs out of “good beer” at the GTG,…a 6 pack?
Oh, and where did you go out of on Red? I remember your posting last year the same scene. Where they cook your catch and serve the big tray with fries and such.
And is that a Lindell Bros. rattle reel in your wheelhouse?

JR’s. Same as last 3 yrs “Boars week”. Good fish fry, decent roads, my opinion: better fishing. May try boondocks next yr. we’ll see.
deertrackerPosts: 9237tim hurleyPosts: 5829December 30, 2017 at 7:56 am #1739534Too cold! Yep got all the gear and clothes for staying warm-but I’m a hole hopper -hate the squeeky snow, hate all the freeze up, and fishing is not better but worse in a cold snap like this. Could sit in my shelter but I go outside to BE outside. Hope we make lots of ice for warm late season Tullie fishing.
