I don’t have a hummingbird compatible GPS but like the idea of using my home computer to do some research. Does the computer have the GPS coordinates on the screen for the spots I would like to check out so I can manually put them in my Garmin handheld? Any other opinions on this product would be great input. If you are like me, you like to do your homework at home first to have somewhat a gameplan to maybe try a new area. The details lf this program look awesome as seen on IDO. Thanks for some info, Ray.

Yes I use it.
Once you select your targets you can get a list of your targets and in the list it will show you the coordinates.I like contour elite it just that even with humming bird equipment I own it is not as easy as I think it should be to add targets to you graph. Or maybe I’m doing something wrong.
Any other questions I would be happy to help.

on some lakes the humps/points don’t match up to my Lakemaster chip very good.February 2, 2015 at 10:40 am #1506029My biggest question at this point is, is it worth what you paid for it. In my mind I think it would be because then I can actually see the 3D contouring that is happening plus all the areas to check out that I probably overlooked.
February 2, 2015 at 1:02 pm #1506113Been thinking about purchasing this for years as well. I love looking at lake maps, but most of the paper ones aren’t that detailed, and looking at my phone or handheld gps is rough on the eyes after awhile. Would love to hear a review from somebody who actually owns it as far as detail and ease of use.

Here is my review.
I think it is worth the money. My understanding is that CE uses the same high definition lakes that are on a lake master chip. What I like about the software is that it allows you to explore a lake. Plot target points and create a game plan for how you are going to attack a lake.
It also has a nice fish search feature that allows you to ask the software of what species you want to fish, the time of year and time of day and other parameters. Once you enter the information you press search and it will high-lite in red places you should try. This gives you a good starting point. You can then create target points and transfer the points to my Humminbird 898, 788, and Minnkota I pilot link trolling motor. I have configured my 788ci to be used ice fishing. (It works oK but prefer my LX7 for the sonar). I used the 788 as a GPS. It is cumbersome because it is big with the ice pack. It would be great if Humminbird made a handheld but they don’t.
In my opinion transferring the way points to a Hummingbird is complicated and it should be easy but it’s not. At least for me.
Step 1 pick your spots
Step 2 save as a humminbird file (I can’t remember the file extension)
Step 3 open the file with Humminbird PC (this always asks to save the above file as a .gpx but whenever I do that it does not work. I save as a .gpx it never works so I have to save as humminbird file and the Humminbird PC software saves it as a .gpx file.
Once saved to an sd card you but into your humminbird and it will load the way points. Personally I think you should not have to use Humminbird PC if you save it as a hummingbird extension.
While it is somewhat cumbersome to save targets (waypoints) there is nothing else out there that is quite like it.What I wish it would do is save all the highlighted areas and transfer them to the SD card. I have to sit there and make a bunch of dots to fill up the shaded highlighted areas and then transfer them it is a pain in the butt.
You are supposed to also be able to connect your GPS to the computer and your screen becomes a large screen GPS this I have not figured out how to do. The company that makes the product is called strategic fishing systems. They have no phone number for tech support you have to email your questions to them.
Personally I think most people (myself included) only use about 30% of the functionality. The software is very powerful but you have to be pretty tech savy to exploit it. The documentation and website is weak on support and FAQ’s. I thought maybe I will give them a call but there is no phone number on their website.February 3, 2015 at 10:54 am #1506526I just ordered the software for the Dakotas and Nebraska. I pretty much purchased it just for Devils Lake. I’m hoping I won’t be disappointed.
February 3, 2015 at 11:03 am #1506528Thanks Bob! Just the kind of review I was looking for. Only bummer is that contour elite is only available for PC’s and everything in our household is Apple with the exception of one old laptop I have. Will have to look into whether its powerful enough to run the software or not…
February 3, 2015 at 12:27 pm #1506567Thanks Bob for the excellent feedback, I spent alot in the last two years on equipment, so it will have to wait for just a little longer.
February 3, 2015 at 3:24 pm #1506663Actually I run it on a net book with a lowly atom processor and only 2 G of memory and it works. It is a little slow but workable.
Im thinking of buying a windows tablet and connecting it to a GPS and using the larger screen of the tablet to view my position and were I’m going. I just have to do a little research to find what GPS will provide the out put to the Tablet
February 5, 2015 at 10:14 am #1507401Well, walked into the Cabela’s bargain cave yesterday, and low and behold they had a couple copies of Contour Elite there for 50 bucks off. So, I bit the bullet and bought it. Installed it last night on my dinosaur of a laptop. The installation was pretty easy, and my first opinion of it is that it’s pretty sweet! I haven’t had a chance to really dig into a lot of the capabilities, but checked out a few of my favorite lakes, and the detail and accuracy seems really good. So much nicer to look at maps on my laptop then my handheld or phone. As far as prepping for future trips, I could really see this being a game-changer…
Thanks Bob!!!

Welcome aboard if you or anyone should have any questions I would be happy to answer. I’m not saying I am an expert but know enough to be dangerous.
