I know right!! Temps here in West MI are below freezing at night, just enough to have skim ice on the shallow back bays of my first ice lake…only to be gone by mid-day with temps in the upper 40’s and rain. Extended outlook shows no change in this…I really hope we don’t finally get a solid 2″ of ice only to get 12″+ of snow, if that happens I’m cutting the shrink wrap off my boat and driving south every weekend!!

Blame it on El Nino! The weather forecasters are predicting a warmer than normal winter in the Dakotas! I have a feeling ice fishing on the Missouri River impoundments will be limited at best. Oh well, the boats can still hit the open water.

+1, NASA and other smart folks have predicted this for months…

It sure looks like a couple more duck hunts will be in order instead of early ice over here in SD. Best case almost feels like it should all just melt off and start over, ice will be sketchy all year at this point.

I sent a friend of mine to a little honey hole. 4-5″ of ice and plenty of decent fish

My thought as well. In western MN we had an inch or so of ice before the snow hit. Ice will be terrible if it doesn’t all melt and we get a redo. The 10 day forecast is calling for upper 40s so I think we’ll get a fresh start.

Well James, I guess you’ll have to show us how to catch late late fall, early winter walleyes from open water on the Mississippi… whistling

Usually look to be on the ice for my birthday but I don’t see enough ice by the 12th. Guess I’ll cut wood.

I don’t get what everyone is so torn up about. I’d rather spend a day in my boat than in my otter HANDS DOWN. Going to be the river for me until maybe the holidays.

The only reason I ice fish is to keep my sanity during January and February. Not because I actually enjoy doing it.

That’s an option. Of course I sold my boat so that does complicate things more than a little.

I think it more likely that we’ll just get in the truck and drive. North Dakota, Montana, somewhere in Canada. My feet have been on ice and it would be hard to get geared up to get back in a boat so soon.

Different strokes. Different folks. I spent so much time on the river during the winter back in my guiding days I have a hard time getting jacked about now. Of course if ever there was a year to do it this would be it.

I hear ya James, but you weren’t doing a show back in your guiding days. Now it is a great opportunity to share that experience with a larger audience.

Is IDO becoming an ice fishing only experience? Sometimes ya just gotta go with what Mother Nature gives you. Lemonade out of lemons…

For me ice fishing is what I look forward to all year. I have a nice boat and enjoy fishing and cruising in it but ice fishing is my favorite outdoor activity. I like it because you are free to do other activities while fishing like: BBQ, throw the football around and play hockey, have a bonfire, and of course drink with less consequences (sleeping overnight in the shack rather than drive the boat around), and my beer never gets cold. Being out on the lake in the middle of the night feels like im camping out in the country somewhere or up north far far from the city. I cant get that feeling doing anything else while in the city and I think that’s what I like most about it. Sometimes I catch fish too
