White bass continuous season

I may find myself on Lake St. Croix some time before opener, mostly to test out some stuff and get familiar with new electronics. I checked the regs and it says there’s a continuous open season for white bass so I figure maybe I’ll give it a shot as long as I’m there.

My question — what’s the best way to target whities without being accused of targeting walleye out of season? I’ve never actually tried for these fish, but caught oodles of them while walleye fishing. it seems technique can be awfully similar. Obviously if I caught walleye/sauger I’d immediately release.

Is this as simple as just saying “I’m targeting white bass?”

    Thanks!

I would say that is correct.

In reality as long as you dont have any walleye in the boat and any incidental catches are released immediately you should be fine. Also if you do happen to start catching walleye consistently it may be best to find a different spot.

when targeting i like find active feeding fish. simplest way is to look for the birds. i like to use casting spoons, top water plug or in-line spinners. tough to say ur targeting wallys using those types of lures =)
u might get alot of smallies tho lol

If the lures/tactics/strategy are similar for walleye and white bass, I would say you’ll be ok. Now if muskie season was closed and you were throwing a bucktail and “targeting” panfish, then you might get busted haha.

I like to use the smallest VMC Mooneye jig I can get away with, 1/16, 1/8 or 1/2 oz. With a 3″ Big Bite, plastic shad, white or pearl.

This. If you expect to catch an out of season fish on subsequent casts you are targeting.
