Which wheel house would you buy and why?

Another wheel house thread. I am in the market for one either this year or next year and it seems like every company has started building them. If you were strictly looking for a 6.5 x 14 or 6.5 x 16 fish house what would you buy and why? Are aluminum frames as good as they thought and is it worth the extra money compared to a rhino lined steel frame?

    Thanks. Chad

I have a 6.5 x 14 Firebrand all aluminum that was finished from the factory. It has a rear ramp door, dinette table that converts to bunk, an upper bunk, stove-range, furnace, stereo, led lighting, and 5 holes. I love the design and how it trailers, it’s a bit heavier than anticipated but hasn’t been a trouble with my 550 Yamaha ATV except for the rear end squat, but that is more the fault of the independent rear suspension on the ATV. I’ve only had it since October of last year and have also used it as a hunting shack and a moving trailer twice. I store the ATV and all my ice fishing gear in it so I’m ready to roll. I even put a two deep cycle battery system with a shoreline converter charger and .made hookups for my locators. I love the design, but the only thing I can’t vouch for is the longevity…maybe in 5 years I can give first hand knowledge of that.

Firebrand would be my first choice. The only thing I dislike in the firebrand and the reason I didn’t pick one up this year is due to the wheel wells encroaching into the unit. Even though it is only a couple inches it bugs the heck out of me.

Me too at first, but after living with it here is my take. It protects the lowering mechanism and allows for a full 6.5 main width of box. My full size Chevy lines up perfectly and I get full use of my mirrors without extensions. Inside they built these long cabinets that make great ice fishing rod holders. Finally, the small shelves have proven to be invaluable, being able to place all kinds of stuff on them is priceless. I didn’t realize how beneficial they were.

Not to move the topic but castle rock if you pull your 14′ wheel house a lot early season with your atv like I do I highly suggest this trailer dolly. It has worked great for me I did put chains on my rear tires of my can am to help for traction tho once you take that extra weight off your machine you lose some traction.

I really like that ATV dolly. I was looking at modifying a hand trailer dolly, but here is a heavier duty unit all done. What I have done is transfered all my equipment to the back of the trailer to counterbalance and lessen tongue weight, it minimizes squat while giving my tracked unstudded atv trsction on glare ice. As far as snow, I do have a tow ski almost identical to the one shown.

Thanks for the replies. A little shocked the few responses said Firebrand. Don’t get me wrong they look like a great house but are fairly new so that’s what scares me a little. Hopefully I will get a few more replies. Thanks.

My dad bought a grey wolf this winter and has been very happy with it. Lots of space, storage and 8 good fishable holes. Trailers nice. Bunks are 300 lbs capacity compared to the castles at 250 lbs and being 6’6″ 275, I appreciate that. Really like the heavy duty rubbed floor.

Once again I would encourage you to go 8 ft width when you’re spending that much anyway. I think most wheel house owners would agree.

I have heard some insulation issues with the grey wolfs. How is it on the propane?

We are up in ND in the midst of a ridiculously cold winter, with zero snow for banking. Given this, it seems ok. 40000btu furnace and the floor is fully insulated. Been out on some -15 nights with 20+mph winds. Finally getting hole sleeves for every hole made a huge difference.

They are new (er). A guy that used to be at Yeddi started Firebrand and stole a bunch of yeddi guys.

The statement above is false. Firebrand bought out The RoadDogg Ice Box fishouses and changed the name.

I was told by the owner of “fish in Style” that the above statement is correct. With that said Roadogg may have been purchased and then re-branded.
