Looking for a little help choosing swivel for 832 lead core. I will be trying lead core for the first time. After doing some reading on this site in I am going to use the 12# Suffix LC. I am making a trip to Cabelas to pick some up and want to get some Spro swivels for connection based on advice I have read here on the site.

Looking at Cabelas web site there are a bunch of different swivel styles and sizes. Can anyone recommend the specific size Spro swivel they are using ? Appreciate any suggestions as these little buggers are spendy and I want to make sure I get the right ones for the application.

    Dellintel,
Are you going to use the swivel to connect the lead core to your leader?
If so the “Willis Knot” is what I would recommend.
Here is a link to a youtube video on how to tie it. It’s never failed for me.

The Willis Knot is the way to go. If you use a swivel a lot of times your guide on the reels will cause it to bind up.

I recommend a size 12 swivel. 832 seems to need the swivel or it kinks up.. I also would recommend the 18lb

You need a swivel with 832 leadcore. I use the Eagle Craw brand and I believe size 16. Whatever size fits through my linecounter reels.

Willis knot, do not use swivel, it will ruin your line guides.

Without the swivel line twist breaks down the lead ,I would say don’t reel the swivel into the guides.

Take a look at the Mr. Walleye brand trolling rods. I have run swivels for 5 years and have never broken a guide on any of the 4 I own. I also have 2 Depthmaster shorty rods and they have been fine too.

Running a swivel is a must with 832 plus I retie my leaders every few trips and the swivel makes it easier.

I am not sure of the size swivel, but I use the smallest that fit thru the tip top of the rod and level wind of the reel. I have been using leadcore for over 5 years and have NEVER had a issue with the swivel damaging a guide or level wind, and I have 4 setups that I use regularly. Line twist will damage your leadcore line beyond repair, a swivel will take care of that.

A swivel is a must with the 832. Whatever size is just small enough to fit through the levelwind. I tried tying a Willis knot with the 832 when I first started using it and I couldn’t even do it. The stuff opens up like a Chinese finger trap so the other line would just poke through. I used a simple uni knot and had problems with kinking and breakage of the lead.

I use 832 on 6 different set ups with swivels on the backing and leader for coho and king salmon and have caught multiple 20+ lb fish with no problems of guide damage.

I personaly use the willis knot to attach leader to the lead core and then put a small spro about 4-6 feet in front of the lure. Read about it in a post from James and works great, as you dont have to reel in the swivel, still get the twist management of the swivel, and you can replace the piece of line after the swivel if it gets a few dings without having to change the length or re-tie the willis knot. So far has worked great for me the past 2 years.

For those of you who tie the lead core unto a swivel, what knot do you use? A Uni?

Polamar knot. In case you don’t know, you must remove about 6″ to 8″ of lead from the line before you tie it on to anything.

I like to keep my knots easily changeable so when connecting the leader to the lead, I use the bow tie knot like the kind for tying your shoes. I lose quite a few cranks but worth it for ease of quick changes.

As others have said you will definitely want to use a swivel with Suffix 832 (or any other leadcore for that matter) to avoid getting any line twist back onto the lead which will greatly reduce the life of you line. I do use a swivel and have gotten 2 full seasons out of my 832 without any issues.

I have also had no issues with the swivel ruining my rod eyes on trolling rods, this is much more of an issue where you would be casting. Spro swivels are the way to go IMO and I can’t remember their sizing but just buy the smallest ones you can find.

WOW, did I read this right. To each their own, loosing one crank and I would be looking for a new knot. He must have more money than brains.
