Is the boat already wired for 24 volt? If so I would go that route. You wont really need it, but the battery use will be less and it will move that thing along nice.
I have the 80# 24V 60″ on my Classic 165. Zero issues. I think the 55# would be to small and short. But what do I know??? I’m 60 years old and it’s my first (and last) “real boat”.
You won’t regret having the extra power and length when you need it.
Don’t disagree that you won’t regret going bigger but if 55# isn’t enough for a 16 foot aluminum boat I am not really sure what you would put it on…not to many boats smaller than 16ft these days.
Guys run 80# on 18-19 ft glass all day long.
I have a 55lb 12v Terrova on my Competitor 165 tiller. It’s always been enough. That being said, when it’s time to replace it I’ll be going with a 24v system. The main reason I’d upgrade to 24v is for more capacity so I dont have to charge as often.
If you plan on fishing rivers a lot I’d go for the 24v. For most everyday situations the 12v will be just fine.

Not sure why you would not charge after each use. Takes a whole 3 seconds to plug it in.

55 lbs can be marginal in wind and current. Plus when maxed out, will quickly eat up the available battery juice.
A 55 came on my Crestliner 16.5 foot hull. I upgraded to the 80lb/60 inch and am very satisfied that I did.

Agree, a buddy has the boat your talking about and the 55# will work fine and keep the weight down with only needing one battery. Having the 24 volt would keep you from needing to charge on the water for long weekends depending on how much you plan to use it during your outings. I will say this I have the 24 volt 80# on a deep V175 boat and have wished I went with a 112 a few times trying to spot lock in crazy winds. Granted looking back at it I probably should have just packed it in.
I used to run a 55 and happy I bumped up to an 80. Our boats are comparable in length, beam, and dry weight according to the specs I can find if you’re running the 2023 classic tiller. Mine is 16’9″, 79″ beam and 800 lbs dry weight. Yours is shorter, wider, and slightly heavier.
if the boat is wired for 24v, go that route. With the 24v, you get the 60in shaft which is better on windier days, plus the trolling motor wont have to work as hard
If budget is an issue, the 12v 55lb will work good enough on most days but not all
I have an Alumacraft Dominator 165, I started out with the 55lb, 54in shaft Powerdrive with Autopilot, after a couple years, I upgraded to the 24v 60in shaft 80lb thrust and that was a game changer for my style of fishing

I do at home. I also fish in Voyager’s National Park multiple times each year where charging isn’t quite so easy.
I would go with the 24V 80#. Sure the 55 would move it fine when the battery is fully charged. If your trying to go against any wind/current, you can drain your battery in a hurry. Gets worse the older your batteries get.
I run a AC Summit 165, a tad lighter than your set up. Im running the 80# 60” Terrova. Would not go with less umph. Pair it with a lithium as every pound counts in a 16’ boat
