Where’s the ice?

Alright guys I need some help. I live and ice fish the eastern basin of Lake Ontario, witch is called the golden crescent. We have had horrible unseasonably warm weather and wind that is probably going to keep me from fishing my favorite spot. Luckily I’ve got plenty of vacation time and I’m thinking about traveling somewhere in February for some good walleye fishing for a week or 2. I’d like to keep it within a days drive or so and may possibly fly. Any recommendations for lakes with big walleye and lodging? Or maybe a guide?

I would go to Lake Winnipeg, Mille Lacs, or Lake of the Woods, in that order for big walleye. That would probably be a flight for you however….I’m guessing Erie probably doesn’t have safe ice this year otherwise that would be the place I would go.

I would look into bay de noc or sagana or Michigan somewhere for proximity. Or Winnipeg.

We’ve had so much snow here in central MN that slush and general travel conditions have been tough. I’d probably look at LOTW possibly even up towards the NW Angle to get reduced pressure.

If it was me, I would cross Mille Lacs off the list for February. Fish can still be had in February, but it typically slows way down. And for a big trip for a week or two and possibly flying in.. The others would be a better selection IMO.

Thanks for the information! I think I’m heading to lake of the woods either the last week in February or the first week in March. Of you guys have a suggestion for lodging and guides? Ive talked with several around beaudette area near rainy river.
