Before houses are out they typically charge $25 to stay in a shack on shore. Try beacon harbor or outdoor authority.

I would think any of them. No real rule as to not being able to sleep in a vehicle. Most of them have a backlot with ice castles parked in them and people using their fish houses as a base camp. They do usually charge 25 a night to “camp” but that includes daily road or access pass. I highly doubt any of them will notice if someone is crashing out for a few hours in their vehicle. On the other hand, most offer a relatively cheap rate to rent one of their houses on shore. Even if it’s 25 a night, it usually includes the daily access fee. So stay in the truck and idle gas for a few hours plus a road pass for 2 days or pay the rental rate and have everything included.

I’ve slept in a truck at Rogers’ for first ice before. Cant remember if theres an overnight parking fee or not, but we weren’t questioned. Obviously pay the launch pass and you’ll be fine. Especially if you’re spending a few bucks on some beers and pizzas at the bar too.

Oh boy, we’re staying there for 2 nights this coming week. I stayed at the Northhome Inn last year. It was not fancy to say the least but was a place to stay and pretty cheap.

I think Beacon Harbor is reasonable but they’ve been booked both times I tried to stay there. If they don’t have shacks out staying in one of there perms on shore might be the best way to go.

Yo…..please put up a review after your stay at Shooks. I’ve always wanted to know but need an honest assessment first! It can’t be that bad right?

I mean we stayed in Buddy Hillman’s skid houses in Spring and I lived through that. Try sleeping there next to a ditch with mosquitoes the size of golf balls and the sweet smell of thawing minnow carcasses.

For a place to crash for the night, Shooks Motel works well. We have stayed there a few times never a complaint. I have also just drove to Black duck and spent the night at the Drake Motel. Reasonably price, clean, they have fish cleaning room. The walls may be a little thin, but I was able to pick up a few tips from the guys in the next room.

If I was going to do it again I would just stay in my Otter if the weather didn’t turn super wild.

I’ve stayed at shooks many, many times. It’s a great place and it’s always been clean when I’ve been there. I would really like to hear from people who actually had a bad experience there…I’m guessing anyone bashing just sees a small motel in the middle of nowhere and assumes it’s a dump.

    I’m in a stereotyping mood:

There are a lot of metro area/suburban “outdoorsmen” who are probably upset there isn’t a Keurig in every room with memory foam mattresses when they shared reviews. coffee

I added a kitchenette to the room. Pretty sure it’s going to smell like fried fish at the least!

I can’t imagine it being that bad. I’m sure not looking to stay at a place that puts a mint on my pillow each day.

We stayed at Shooks one night on the way to lake of the Woods a couple of years ago. I thought it was decent. Clean and well kept. The lady we dealt with was nice also.

I second this opinion. If fishing is your objective sleep at the shooks.

Another one here who has stayed at the Shooks. Was there once 5 or 6 years ago and it was exactly what we needed. Like others have said, its not a Hilton but the room was clean and well kept. Wouldn’t hesitate to stay there again if need be.

Stayed at Royal Shooks last night and tonight. No issues at all. Not fancy, but don’t need it to be. Good price, room was clean and everything worked. Simple no frills place to stay for fishermen.

Fishing has been slower. Had a nice fish meal both nights but fish have been very sluggish. Everything on jig and minnow or deadstick. Deadstick actually accounted for very few fish, though the biggest fish at 22 inches did hit a deadstick tonight. Most fish have been a little over 17 inches.

Giving it a shot for a while tomorrow in the 2nd round cold front before heading home.

jester well that beats my experience. we stayed at a resort on leech back when these resorts where first starting to cater to the winter sports people and modifying there cabins for winter usage. the outside door had a 3/4 inch crack. didn’t need to worry about a lack of fresh air!!!!!! peace

Stayed at the Shooks years ago with no problems. We also stayed at one in Deer River as we fished perch in Winni then left around 3 to head to the giant crappie. Can not remember the name of that one but the owner had a Victory or ? motorcycle in the lobby. It worked but was a little sketchy. It is gone now torn down. I remember the shower not have a nice spray but more of a power washer head that would almost peel your hide. You could back up and cook on your tailgate right at your door. Boy those were some long fishing days. Seems like we also stayed at a motel about half between Winni and Red on the right side of the road on a hill. (Hillside)?

Holy cow. No it certainly didn’t look like that! Shooks is nothing fancy but for the price we thought it was fine and had good truck and trailer parking.

Guys on red lake how is the bite through winter? I know that early ice it can be really outstanding but I can not get up there that early… Is it worth a trip later in winter?

I certainly don’t want to discourage you from going but I’ve been multiple times late January into February and it’s comparatively dead. YMMV
