Was looking at an old isuue of In Fisherman, Doug was talking about how to stay warm. He had great things to say about alpaca socks. Checked them out online, they are warmer and wick moisture better than any kind of wool, soft durable-sold. Not a fan of buying clothes online, does anyone sell them in the Twin Cities? Anyone know of a good brand online (Alpaca of Montana sounds cool, that might be enough!)Thanks

There’s a store in MOA called Alpaca Connection. Walked past dozens of times but never been in. Worth a call maybe.

Have you looked at “Darn Tough” of Vermont.

They warranty their socks for life. They are a merino wool blend.

Pricey, but if you send them back they will replace them.

A couple/three pairs should take you through the ice seasons for the rest of your life…

Do you own a pair of the mountaineer/hike sock? It’s the thickest they make per website, but I’m curious to if thickness equals warmth?

Love all my darn tough socks, but they get cold in waders or muck Boots, but also heaviest I have is a midweight.

Former coworker of mine owns this place with his wife here in Rochester. I have one pair of their mid-grade socks. They’re very warm; warmer than my SmartWool I think. I think they send their alpaca wool off and it gets made by another company.

I do like SmartWool. For ice fishing I’ve gone to their heaviest “Mountaineering” sock, which is pretty warm. I may also search for a heavier weight alpaca version, too.

Serenity Now Alpaca Farm opened a store in Deer River last fall. They have an alpaca form outside of Jenkins and also rent out their house during summer weekends as an Airbnb. Favorite weekend of the summer for my grandkids.

Website for the store: https://www.serenitynowalpacas.com/shop/socks/3 I have a couple pair of the Mountaineer socks and love them. Also, the boot liners are very comfortable and warm.

    Nicest people in the world.

You can buy Alpaca wool direct from the farms, then all you need to do is learn to knit.

Lots of great tips-do some reading on wool vrs. alpaca. I have great boots so my feet really don’t get cold, but my feet sweat a lot so the wicking is an issue.
I have some Darn Tough socks, and I am not going to learn to knit!

There is an adorable shoppe in Shoreview called The Chickadee Boutique which sells these alpaca socks. They are warm and comfortable and not too thick that you can’t get your boots on. They have several sizes for men and women and come in different colors and and lengths. The Chickadee is only open seasonally in the spring and fall but these socks are absolutely worth the wait! They open again on April 2nd.

Just bought a pair of Baffin Eigers. Baffin recommends just a thin liner sock to wick moisture. Don’t need wool socks.

Maybe they’re meat alpacas and not wool alpacas. )
