I’m looking to do some grilling out quite a lot in the near future, just wondering where the best spot to buy steak is in the east or south metro? Or for that matter any other type of meat that’s good on the grill. Also any other cuts I should try? Just got my first grill and ready to go to town!

Your 1st grill? Man I wish you lived closer! Thielen Meats near to you would be a good start.

I haven’t found a butcher hmthat has better steaks than festival foods. There’s one in Hugo if that’s close to you. All of their cuts are very good. The all border on usda prime at times. I even found usda prime there. For grilling I do recommend ny strip steaks though. I usually buys whatever is on sale.

Here’s how I like to grill them.

Von Hansen’s and we just grilled some Hyvee sirloins that were very good.
Greg’s bacon is the best, not so much for their steaks.

That would be my guess. Otherwise he wouldn’t be able to afford steaks. grin

I haven’t found an affordable place that also carries quality. Not sure that even exists.
For quality, I’m usually happy with Byerlys or Von Hansons, probably in that order.

I have gas and charcoal-gas is good for anything you ewant to cook slow and steady like sausage; no difference in taste FOR Sausage IMO. Charcaol for steaks and burgers, big difference in taste there

Hy-vee is actually very impressive. Another impressive place is Family Fresh in Farmington. their butcher shop is very good and the sales they put on some things are crazy.

Greg’s is an awesome place, I get my pig processed there every year and have had a deer processed there also. However, their steaks are pretty expensive and the quality isn’t much better than Hy-Vee. I second EPG’s comment about their bacon! Top notch and the price is worth it.

Get a deep freezer and buy a chunk of a cow and a whole pig. I just picked up my 2nd pig this year and for what I would have to pay just for the bacon I got the rest of the pig. That is the only way I know of to save money on meat. It is also easer going to the grocery store since I don’t need to buy meat.

HyVee in Oakdale really does good meats and for a supermarket, they are really consistent.

The Sam’s Club in Woodbury now has a premium meats butcher counter that’s worth a look if you’re a member.

To be honest, the stuff straight out of the case at Sams Club is also terrific if you’re not afraid to trim and do a little aging yourself. When I buy steak, I keep them in the fridge for about 5-7 days to put a little age on them. Then I trim them and repack using the vac sealer. I seem to get as good of steaks, as consistently doing this as anywhere else I’ve bought them.

There’s got to be way better options than Hyvee for steaks in the cities I hope. Their grade (blue ribbon) isn’t even choice, it’s between select and choice. Step it up a notch guys.

In Inver Grove Heights the Meat Store on 80th street had a great selection and offers several different cuts.

Seriously. Festival Foods. Check it out.

Here’s another excellent option. Look at the marbling on this ribeye. I purchased this from the co-op in Cambridge. These steaks are awesome too.

East Metro, I’d go with Borchart’s in St. Paul. Great meat, very good service. If you are more DIY and ok with doing a bit of work, Costco whole ribeye primals are a great choice.

Home town meats in Inver Grove Heights or Husniks in South saint paul. Now I’m going to stop and get a steak on the way home from work tonight.

Hands down it is Duffs Meats in Hastings. He supplies the steaks for the birch restaurant and I believe Kowalskis. Don’t even try to argue this one. Rated the top butcher shop. Also Has the original recipe for ambassador hot dogs. Mom and pop operation.

I really like Costco’s steaks. They carry USDA choice all day every day at a solid price (I think $8.99/lb for NY strip and $9.99/lb for Ribeye).

They will often have USDA prime available in some of those cuts as well.

Tough to consistently beat that price and the quality is good. They also cut them really thick, which I like.

I’ve been pleasantly surprised with Costco Steaks especially for the price. Might be a good place to start until you know which cuts you prefer, and then find a local shop that will customize it to your preference. I like T-Bone’s so if I feel like a great meal, I will have the butcher cut me a nice 2″ thick one. Most local butcher’s will customize for you.

They have choice grade in the select case at the butcher’s counter in the Oakdale store.

Not sure if every HyVee has this, obviously, but the Oakdale one does.

Personally I like meat and if you like meat you don’t have to go to these butcher shops to get good meat. Cub foods for the most part has very good meat for reasonable prices.

Look for meat on sale like chuckeye or country style ribs for beef. Beef has gotten way out of hand price wise for me so I tend to keep an eye on those lesser cuts of meat, properly grilled just as tastey as those $8.99 cuts.
Pork and chicken are a great value and man they can stand up to beef at the table. Keep your options open and you will enjoy grilling rather fretting over whats the best butcher shop.

I’m with sinker. Give me meat and I’m happy. Do hope one day I’ll develop the time and taste buds for fine cuts and butcher shop discrepancies.

Don’t bash me, but Wal-mart ribeyes (black foam package) are really good. Tops quite a few of our local meat markets in the area.

It’s not a meal if it doesn’t have meat.
For burgers try 1 lb ground beef and 1 lb ground pork.

I don’t know what Cub you go to, but all the ones around my place stink. Even after Hyvee opened and they scrambled to remodel the their meat depts. Terrible selection, just terrible.
