I got a new 10/22 Ruger for Christmas and I would like to try it out. Are there any places where I can legally shoot? Are gun ranges the only option? I live in St. Michael and there are several public waterfowl hunting places near me. Can you shoot a .22 there, or is it only shotguns? Any info would be great.
    Thanks,
    Dan

I know about the indoor ranges. I was hoping to find an outdoor option. But Bills might be the best option. Thanks.

Special restrictions exist on most WMAs, WPAs, etc and other public hunting areas near the metro such that target shooting is specifically banned. Read the rules carefully if you do try to go this route.

I’m not very familiar with the west metro range scene, I just know a few names that come up often.

Is Beaverbrook Sportsman’s Club open to the public? I know they have a range, but it may be member’s only.

Osseso has some kind of gun club out there as well.

I know Bald Eagle Sportsman’s club up in the Hugo areas gets a lot of guests from the north metro and near-west metro, I know that’s a little hike to the east for you, but I suspect the reason guys are coming from the west is because of limited options for public range time.

Hopefully other guys from the wild west metro will chime in with some options.

Nice little Christmas present. You putting a scope on her and getting her dialed in?

check local laws for shooting near homesteads. I think you cannot shoot within 500 yards of a house. I know you can waterfowl hunt on the crow river in some spots but that’s with a shotgun which is different than a rifle. I would call a DNR agent and ask them. They have been helpful in answering questions for me about shooting near the metro

Beaverbrook is now open to the public on certain days of the week. 15 year old Stepson works the trap lanes up there. I think right now it is only open trap on Sundays.

Cool, thanks guys! I got the gun to help my kids learn the shooting basics. I might put a scope on it eventually, but I want them to learn with iron sights first. We do have property way up north where we can shoot, but it’s a haul.

Osseo Gun Club is a really nice indoor option, if you end up going that route. Half price lanes Tuesday – Thursday from 10:00 – 2:00, too.

Monticello gun club has a rifle range. Actually they both might have lanes but I know the one by the river for sure still has one. Been a lot of years since I shot trap at the one south of town by the gravel pit so I’m not sure if they still have one or not? Call around. Your better of going away from the cities rather than towards it.

Cool, thanks guys. I’m going to give the Osseo Range a try. It’s right by my work.

There is also an indoor range in Rogers. I think it is called Target Sports.

Grats on the 10/22! One of the most fun and addicting shooters out there…
