So since some lakes are opening up, what is best way to target crappies? Since pool 4 landings are closing, I need to go to plan B. I have never targeted them at ice out before. Casting smaller plastics or minnows under a float? What is the best strategy? From reading here a bit it seems like I should look for shallower bays since the water warms there faster. Is that accurate? TIA

Yes, shallower bay, preferably if on the north side of the lake where the sun shines the longest on it. Under 8’, near brush or overhanging trees, pencil reeds etc. warmer channels are good too.

Like you said, small jig and plastic and/or minnow under a slip bobber, slow retrieve and pause. Wash, rinse repeat.

Head to the marinas and harbors where there’s lots of rip rap.

Minnows under a float. Jig/plastics either cast or under a small float. Feather or hair jigs same as plastics. They’ll all work if crappies are there. Plastics are my preference. Purple/chartreuse tail or clear glitter/chartreuse tail.

Got this one bank fishing last night, been waiting for a 15” metro slab. A lot of 10-13s and 5-8 also. 5ft
