This is my first boat I have ever owned. Bought it this spring. Guy said it had a new lower unit put on it a couple years ago. It looks new and shiny compared to the rest of the outboard (93 mercury 40hp tiller oil injected). I am trying to make up my mind if I should winterize it already or if I might get out a couple more times. So I cracked the lower plug and let a little dribble out on a towel. When you guys say “milky” what do you mean? It’s kind of an olive green looking color.

Milky oil is usually much lighter than that.

That stuff looks great! I would still change it before winterizing. An off white creamy color is milky

    Looks good.

Milkiness depends if you have used it recently or not. If it has sat for a few days the water/oil settle out and the oil will look better. That is when you want to crack open the bottom plug and see if water drains first. If it’s just clean oil then you are good.

If the motor has just been ran recently milkiness will clearly show up if there is water in the oil.

Yea if it looks like oil still, you should be fine…. imagine oil and water mixed together for a while – you get an ideal of milky. It won’t look much like what comes out of the bottle any longer.

If it hasn’t been ran for a while in particular, and you pump a bit in from the bottom, the milky “est” of it all is often at the top and would come out of the top fill hole looking a bit ugly.

I’d say put that boat away, vacuum out the wheelhouse, pull it to the shore of the Pond and call me when you’re on them. whistling waytogo woot

Lol. It can’t come soon enough. I only bought this boat thing to get me through until ice again. Wheel house is all cleaned up. I just gotta pack the bearings and the Blue, slang word for child born out of wedlock that starts with a b (my wife named it) is ready to go. waytogo

Close enough SJ. If you type the word in and submit it, IDO has some kind of filter that turns it to monkey butt. But that doesn’t have quite the ring to it. Lol.

Milky oil looks like coffee with creamer in it. Your oil looks fine. waytogo Green color is probably full syn oil.
