My turn parents are up in years.
I’m living overseas sis is in canada.
And they are warm in florida.
Brains are shrap but body is fallin apart heart eyes etc.
Nursing homes in my mind are like familys that just stopped caring, out of sight out of mind just go there and die.
    Any wisdom out there?

As a charge nurse at a nursing home here are my thoughts.

    1. Yes, some residents appear to be sent to a nursing home to be out of sight out of mind. Sad to see.

    2. Some residents have family members who are irritatingly involved and present all the time. To the point where they interfere with our ability to care for the resident.

    3. Some residents (the best case scenario) have family memebers that come often but are basically hands off when it comes to the care they are there to recieve.

It is what you make it. Nursing Homes can be a great place (usually always a necessity) for a resident. There is no rule that says you cannot stop in to visit your loved ones as often as you like. We attempt to live by the idea that while this is our place of work, the nursing home is the resident’s HOME. And we treat it as such.

There are other options as well. Assissted living, Home care, etc.

    Wade,

A BIG thank you for you and your place of employment for this kind of thinking. I wish all places abided by the same code of conduct.

We are in the process of finding a nursing home for my dad. He is in advanced stage Alzheimer’s and my Mom can’t take care of him because it is literally killing g her. There comes a time when the choice has to be made. My Dad is healthy as a horse other than his brain. He will not be out of sight out of mind. We will visit as much as we can and I’m sure Mom will be there all the time. Even for me it is a guilt filled process but at some point it has to be done for the heath of other family members.

It seems like old folks tend to fall into 1 of 2 categories, sharp mind but failing body or strong body but failing mind. I’ve had one of each with my parents. The sharp mind will give you better options for minimal care and some dignity. The home that my mom was in had a wide variety of care packages where cost was almost like a menu based thing depending on the level of care needed.
