When do you guys really start targeting flats? Is it a time of year or a water temp thing?

I would say flats come alive based on water temperature, which usually does correspond with the calendar. This year, with extremely low flows for spring time, the temp is higher earlier. Generally once it hits 60 degrees you are good to go to target flats.

    Agreed with Doug.

It’s pretty lonely targeting flats below 60 degrees speaking from experience. Based on 9 years of experience there isn’t a >reliable< bite before 65 degrees. Not saying they can’t be caught before that it’s just that where I fish, I haven’t had a reliable bite before 65 and that was never before the 2nd week of May.

This year sure could be different and I’ll let you know after this weekend.

Stillwater river gage shows 62 degrees right now. I’ll have bullheads dancing in the water tonight.

The past two years as soon as I find bullheads in the creeks I start catching flats. I got a good start on my bullhead supply this week. whistling
