Wheelhouse purchase

  • #1446846

Our family is looking into buying a fish house for this upcoming hard water season. We are a family of 4 so would need something that we can have enough room & also sleep in. We know we want to get a house with a toy hauler door. Any suggestions on what you like/don’t like, would have done different, need/don’t need in a house would be helpful. Thanks

Check out Glacier houses they seem to be really nice. Newer in the market but, I like the layout and the toy hauler function better than most.

I would only look at Aluminum frame ones. Much lighter and no rust issues.

Glacier & Firebrand are so new. Anybody have any personal experience with them?

Not other than looking at them online and in person.

I just like the way they look. They seem more functional and easier to clean.

i know the guy that designs the Firebrand houses. They are built very solid, and you will be very please with the wheel/axle system.

I have a 16+3 yeti, to be honest if I were looking to haul a wheeler in addition to weight of the finished house and the items you keep in it I would be looking into the tandem axle options. Wheelers now are around 800#. Not to mention you have 4 ppl in your family, you will want the size of house that requires a tandem axle. 20~24’long.
If you are thinking of finishing the inside yourself to save some money you should know that it actually takes a lot more time than you would expect. Finishing an actual house takes less time.

I am actually wishing I did not put a bathroom in my house now that I did. It is so easy to use my 1 man flip over and small heater with the 5gal bucket/bag option. Let the heater run for 5 min prior to going out and it is toasty warm. The only perk is in really stormy wether.

I think that the big wheelhouses are doing what Harley Davidson’s did 6-8 years ago, everybody and their brother started buying them or building them. Since then many have found them to be very expensive and more work to use and own than they expected and have started to dump them. The auction sites and CList’s are full of the the big ones. I love mine but I’ve been ice fishing for 40 years and went in knowing what to expect and have owned and built many fish houses. There are some super deals out there, everybody’s price is negotiable. I’m a little different than Mark though in that this is my first house with a bathroom and I love it! 1/2 of the V front is plenty of room for a bathroom and leaves a flat wall for a TV. Nothing but socks or slippers for me at night. I’ve never had a combination toy hauler either, it seems like it could be a sloppy mess but lots of people do it. Mine’s built for comfort.
