Wheel Houses

The ice camping post made me wonder. I normally fish a lake that wheel houses really cannot access easily. My question is, if wheelhouses are parked in all of the better spots on the lake, do they get mad when people come fish right next to them or the 10′ rule? If they leave their house out there for weeks at a time , how can they complain if people crowd them?

Just curious how heated it gets.

You’ll see. Why in the world would anyone need to be that close? There’s a million posts on this pro and con. There’s no secret best spots. Make sure you show up right at dusk and drill about 20 holes and then fire up your $200 generator. This gets to be a VERY heated topic. I have a portable and a wheel house so I understand both sides.

The way I see it, if someone is not in their house I can and will fish where I want. If the person comes out when I am fishing, well I was here first, you were here second.

In comparison, it would be like placing a swimming raft over a rock pile in summer and then expecting that nobody would fish near it if you were there or not.
Im not going to gamble with my fishing that someone would show up to use their house…

And yes, I own a wheel shack.

I’m a little baffled why there’s even a discussion about it. People leave permanents in a single location for weeks on end and it’s been going on for decades. What’s different about a wheel house?

If there has been a change it has nothing to do with the house. More likely the result of shifting attitudes.

I fish a lot in SE Wisconsin which gets extremely crowded so I don’t really have an issue as long as they respect the 10’ rule and be smart about drilling. I paid the access for exactly that ACCESS. Beyond that it’s a public body of water. If I’m bringing the house out I try to stay as far away as humanly possible. Sometimes it’s 100 yards. Sometimes it’s the other side of the lake. Hell last year on LOTW we had guys who drilled holes like 4ft away from the house to block the wind. I wish they would’ve been a bit farther, but there wasn’t any danger with them being there so no harm, no foul. I invited a couple guys to fish inside with me once when it was brutally cold out as well.

Fishing is supposed to be fun and relaxing. So getting worked up about someone being in “my spot” or too close isn’t a thing for me. I have enough stress at work to care if someone is close.
