Wheel house bunk bed frame

What does everyone build their bunks out of in the wheel house? I am building both the bunk above the couch and the rear larger bed and all I can think of is 2×4 but they are so heavy to me. I have debated on laying them on the side and attaching 1/2 plywood to both sides. I figure I should see what all the others have done and found out what works best.

    Thank you

In my old permanent, I made a cot-like bunk; two steel pipes with cloth. My Dad used an old Singer sewing machine for upholstery,so that helped. You basically put a 2×4 on each wall with notches for the pipe, when it’s time to sleep, pull one pipe out and put it in the outer notch, stretching the fabric tight. It’s light and is completely out of the way when not in use. Much more comfortable than plywood with foam on top. You can also get by making a wider bunk/cot then you would if were made out of wood and taking up space.

I went with cots in my home brew to. I bought mine on Amazon. Folds away and store in a bag so totally out of the way when not in use. And adds less than 5lbs in weight. Bought a cot mat to go with it. More comfy than the bunks used in most Ice Castles I’ve slept in. Plus it allowed me to mount nice pedestal seats from my pontoon in the ice house for fishing. Beats the heck out of sitting on the edge of a bunk all day. when it’s time for bed the pedestal gets pulled up and the cot gets put up.

The metal electric ones are best if your budget allows. Mine are 2×4’s w/the tongue&groove same as the walls(5/16) on the bottoms and 1/2 inch plywood on top. Way overkill but ok. If you line both sides 2×2’s would work, 1×3’s or 4’s would be perfect and solid. Heavy but minimal in the scope of a wheel house. Just as a side note, pedestals can be a PIA.
