Made it to the River N of Brainerd today. 48 degree water. It was snowing at the start. Did manage 7 smallies and a pike on crankbaits. Not bad. The end is not far off. I need to get skunked before I hang it up. Kinda a fun day. Feels good to be inside watching college football.

What’s working/not working as we go into Fall?

The best is yet to come.
We hammer bass on small baits all winter with short rods and its a blast. Ive pretty much put my bass stuff away for the fall I might try tommorrow, other then that its walleye time. Fun time of the year when the local lakes start giving up walleyes by size and numbersFryDog62Posts: 3696October 17, 2020 at 10:17 pm #1980438Got out only 2.5 hours today, house showings and wife sick. But water temps were 53 and didn’t disappoint, the short time I was out caught 4 fish including one 20 incher.

October 18, 2020 at 7:01 am #198046753 degrees is still doable but like ssaamm said, the end is not far off. Hibernation is coming soon based on the forecast.
October 18, 2020 at 8:17 am #1980490Shore fishing 10/17 :
Out for an hour in the afternoon. One bass about 15″, on my 5th cast. Nothing after that. Seemed like not many fish were active or around.
I was hemmed in because a few other guys were fishing in the small area. That happens on the weekend and I normally don’t go. I was limited to short casts and only used an unweighted T Rig senko. My favorite spot was taken. The spot I was fishing at is treacherous for snagging most other lures. I didn’t see anyone else catching.

Water temps had fallen from 53 Deg. on Sat. to 48-19 yesterday. My guess they will be low 40’s by next weekend. We did manage a few 20″ fish on a slow worked Jerkbait and even a slow rolled spinnerbait. Picture of probably the last picture bass of the year for me. It was a great season for 20″+ fish this year. already looking forward to next years open water season

October 20, 2020 at 12:36 pm #1980984Way to go Mike and Thumper! Braving those elements with success!
tim hurleyPosts: 5829October 20, 2020 at 11:31 pm #1981154We got 5 inches of snow today. Pulled my son’s car out of the woods, too. I’m going to shovel the driveway and give it a shot tomorrow. Probably hit the River with low expectations. Gotta get skunked before I resort to walleyes. This snow is way too early.
October 21, 2020 at 5:30 pm #1981430Didn’t make it out. Shoveled snow all morning. It’s not right to shovel the dock. The landing wasn’t plowed and the dock was pulled out. I whimped out. This is demoralizing.
tim hurleyPosts: 5829October 21, 2020 at 7:50 pm #1981452Shovel just enough to get the boat out! Oh, can’t fish till all the work is done-Wrong!, when would you ever fish????? Well anyway my 2 cents.
DeucesPosts: 5236October 23, 2020 at 12:44 pm #1982040Smallies got the river bends finally, not finding the bigger fish shallower than 8-10′. Super particular on color. IMO stewart pro blue can’t be beat for cold clear water river bass. The pool up here above the falls gets clearer every year, think I can see 6-8′, and that’s with the higher water.
Mpls toad. Seen this fish 3x now past trips with no hookups, just come nab at my bait, tease. Finally hooked into er today at lunch.

FryDog62Posts: 3696DeucesPosts: 5236October 24, 2020 at 9:31 pm #1982295Absolutely smoked em today in the boat. Ringworms, fatheads, suckers, lil picky on color still but bait of choice didn’t matter much.
Find a deeper hole of the upper Miss, usually on a bend after a longer straight section. Find the drop offs into the hole and they are sitting there. Easy to see the football smallie mark on the sonar.
Not sure I’ll get out again before she freezes up but been fun.
tim hurleyPosts: 5829DeucesPosts: 5236October 26, 2020 at 7:41 am #1982516Its supposed to be cold for a few days here but I saw 50 again by the weekend. The river will be worth fishing again IMO.
DeucesPosts: 5236October 26, 2020 at 9:32 am #1982550Ill add in I vertically jigged them. Float with current. Suckers and plastics did take the bigger fish. Blue and white jigheads.
Find the steepest dropoff, into the hole. You’ll see em hiding right behind it. Effective from the St.anthony to 169
October 26, 2020 at 5:58 pm #1982742How deep? I might give it a go on the River in Brainerd one of theses days. Thanks
DeucesPosts: 5236October 26, 2020 at 7:09 pm #1982774That’s relative to the river you’re fishing.
Deepest parts of the entire section where I was fishing is about 24′. Most of the stuff upriver is 4-10′. Drop off is 10-12′ that drops quick into 14-15 and then gradually into the deep. They were stacked anywhere from 12-17′.
If your river you’re fishing is max 16′, those fish might be on the drop from 8′, but who knows, find the bends and scan em!
Good luck
October 28, 2020 at 5:00 pm #1983353Haven’t been out in almost a month for bass. It looks like the jig bite is pretty hot at the moment and I’m hoping the jerkbait bite will produce still. Hopefully getting out one last time Friday before putting the Nitro to bed for the winter.
October 28, 2020 at 6:29 pm #1983394I see a potential 60 degree day towards the middle of next week.

Yeah I know. But the guy I store my boat with needs to do it this weekend. We both need each others’ help getting our boats into this pole barn so we typically need to go together.
I won’t lie, I’m ready for ice fishing….
