What's with everyone needing to film themselves fishing

Seriously every time I’m on the river some one has the go pro and tried pod pointed at themselves. Is it for your 5 minutes of fame on YouTube? What ever happened to taking a picture of a fish and doing a little brag that way.
It’s pretty lame going on you tube and seeing every other guy glorifying himself catching a fish.
Sorry if I’m wrong but I guess that’s my opinion

It’s just a different hobby to try out. It’s not so much about the fishing and more trying to find a cool angle or different way to edit something. Got my Gopro as a gift awhile back and never had a use for it. Got a boat and have been fishing a ton and figured why not put it to use? Not to mention you can make some decent spending money even at mid levels of youtube.

What else ya gonna do with a GoPro? smash

I love watching fishing on YouTube, but if your video is nothing but you driving to the lake, launching the boat, driving around the lake, casting, setting the hook, etc. what’s the point? I’ll skip and thumbs down if it starts out like that and I scan through it and it’s all I see. I want to hear a guy talk; what, where, how, why. Tips, tricks, etc… There are some great youtubers out there, many that would rival Mr. Holst, but there are tons that just want a view count.

Yeah I agree there are a few I love to watch but then I’m recommended 8000 that are terrible and boring. And it made me start thinking maybe I’m the only one who doesn’t film my self. And don’t get me wrong I’m not in any way putting any one down. Except all those extremely lame guys ha ha. Just joking

I don’t claim to be any good but I’m just doing it for fun. If it takes off for some reason then I’ll take it a little more serious. Also, if the videos start to annoy people just say the word and I won’t post anymore. It’s no skin off my back. I’ll still be here reading and asking advice.

With the internet and youtube attention itself has become the main motivator in life for many folks. Going fishing and all the enjoyment of it takes a distant back seat for some and it’s all about ‘likes and views’. I don’t get it either. I fish because I like to fish and I don’t give a darn if anyone knows I’m out or what I caught.

Funny how the amount of 5 lb’ers has fallen since filming started. Look at me, me, me, me…………………………………………….. grin

Just noticed the thread you posted with the video. Definitely not saying you should stop, everyone has the freedom to make/post what they want as well as ignore/stop watching videos they don’t like. If you’re enjoying what you do continue what you’re doing. And IMO if you’re contributing to the forum(which you obviously are) and not just joining to post a video to get views, then continue posting them. We all have the option to ignore them if we so desire.

I’m sorry but I think you answered your own question here. Not much different then a pic and posting it for everyone to see but the pic “moves.” I love hunting videos but not so much fishing.

You ever think that maybe some people do it for their own viewing? I’ve had a Go Pro for six years and not one video is on the internet. No different then taking a picture holding a fish.

Serious question, but how often do you go back and watch yourself fish?

I get how some like the whole editing, making video part of it. Technology advancements has made HQ cameras quite affordable and some people like sitting in front of a screen.

Good point but the level of commitment one goes through on “showing off” is quite different with a video. That is alot of time spent on making these videos which certainly can be appreciated but the fact that so much time has been spent brings up this discussion what kind of intentions that person has when going through the process. Which in turn on a larger scale as the OP i think is getting at where is the sport of fishing going?

I simply dont care enough of others peoples opinions to share my expeditions with them. The hassle of battery life, foggy lens, right positions, etc etc is a headache thinking about it. With that said, my mom took film of my first big flathead last year in which her, her husband and myself went out and thought that was real F’in cool when she showed me. Didnt even know she was filming it on her phone.

To each his own. Personally I go fishing to mentally escape. We did have once where the wife brought the go pro ice fishing when we ended up reeling in a bunch of sunnies. Was fun watching that with the kids so excited. That was more of a home video than something I’d put on YouTube though. I don’t even know how to put a video on you tube.

I do it for personal enjoyment. I love the filming and editing process just as much as Fishing. I only get to go about once a week so it’s neat when every night I can still spend an hour or two looking back and editing footage. It’s awesome looking back at old videos and adventures. Pictures capture the moment, videos let you relive it! Just a few cool things I’ve caught on film were plenty of good sized bass the last couple years, 38” musky ice fishing, few big walleyes through the ice last year, and a coworker catching a 40” pike in Devils Lake North Dakota. Some day my newborn son will be able to look back at those and (hopefully) get some enjoyment from it and get a passion for fishing like me!

No one’s for in anyone to watch.

I video myself fishing for the same reason we used to make home movies. Memories. I post it to YouTube because it is easier to share them.

Despite how time consuming it is, I like video editing as well. I also enjoy the challenge of trying to make them look professional, which is pretty much impossible with one camera, one angle.

If it is posted on youtube I would agree that I would like to see this. I do now understand the fact it would be easier to share a video through youtube with friends. But if that was the case you don’t need to add a “click bait” title to your video like 10lb bass. As a family home movie, my brother has been going to Canada for 10 years musky fishing and it was fun watching his footage of all the big muskies he has caught up there (he didn’t post it on youtube). I do find it frustrating going on youtube looking for fishing videos and 80% of them is a guy driving to a lake, fishing an area, and showing a couple of fish. The only audio on the clip is them asking you to thumb up and subscribe. LOL no. Good for you if you enjoy doing it. But please learn to add some audio of how, why, tip, trick…..

Didn’t the rules change about 6 months to a year ago? Looked like it was pretty tough for a home movie type of guy to make any money.
I think I collected about $200. over 10 years for monetizing my videos some with over 60k views.

It’s been suggested that I film a video while my clients are landing a fish. What happens when I’m thinking about filming and the client loses the fish because I wasn’t paying attention to them?

Personally I hate the time it takes to edit a video. Even if it just getting the dead time out. Typically I nod off until my nose hits the keyboard.

To the guys that do it frequently…. bow

maybe consider not going on YouTube and watching?

i think it’s pretty damn cool that we have crowd-sourced essentially unlimited fishing videos that we can watch anytime we want anywhere we want…for free. it’s just hard for me to see the downside of that other than someone being grumpy when they see a GoPro attached to someone else’s boat.

looking at the view counts, a ton of other people seem to enjoy watching them too. so whether guys/gals are making and posting videos to store their own fishing memories, because they like to play with computers, because they want to help others out with some tips, or even because they want to increase their “brand” and monetize it somehow…good for them! i’ll just enjoy the videos when i can’t get out on the water.

full disclosure, i’m heading north to Lake of the Woods in one week with the GoPros to make some videos, maybe try to catch something too. hopefully i’ll record my 14-year-old nephew’s first Canadian fish. you’re not required to watch.

I wish I had a go pro instead of the bouncy cell phone video I was able to get of my son’s first fish. I upload some videos to the private side of YouTube to easily share with friends and family who are interested.

Agreed. To each their own. I don’t know why it would bother anyone.
    Old man yells at cloud.

The thread did bring up an interesting comparison in my mind because I’m currently reading Gordon Macquarrie’s Old Duck Hunters Association stories (ODH). Pictures, or videos may capture a thousand words however they still only capture a small event about a trip. They do not tell you anything about the trip. {Insert the phrase}, if it is about the fish, then you are doing it wrong. The camera only captures the fish event and misses the real event, the trip.

Reading the ODH stories, while there are only a handful of drawing, no pictures, you are still transported into the trip. Juxtaposed to watching a fishing video or seeing fish pictures, the viewer is transported to a brief moment in time. The picture becomes the trophy and the event that lead us to the trophy is lost.

That might be part of what I like about the IDO shows. They start out talking about the trip setup. They show us getting there. They finish recapping the trip, and in the middle they film the event as much as the fish. I watch the show for glimpses of the event more than the fish pictures.

From that point of view, I like to see a trophy sprinkled in just to document that someone really was fishing but the fishing often takes a backseat to the event itself which is often lost.

Difference maker for me too. I know who are regular contributors and those that I rarely see post unless it’s a video. The latter which I usually don’t take the time to watch.

For how long does one need to watch a video for that counter to go up? 2 seconds, 10 seconds, at least ½ the video length?
You think the fishing ones are becoming overwhelming. My son love to watch other people play video games. There are millions of hours of people playing games talking crap over the video. I hate it and when I come into the room he knows he has to turn it off. My wife lets him watch it and now he gets mad at me when I come home. frown

They did and it was a good thing. You have to have a very high number of views by hour to monetize. On the flip side for users like me is I don’t have adds to annoy me.
