In the Mar/Apr 2020 issue of In-Fisherman they had an article about the new trolling motors. I caught this part:
“Anglers may be disappointed to find that last year’s marvel has been overshadowed by an even grander version coming out soon. There are rumors of more manufacturers entering the trolling motor market, most notably J.L. Marine, maker of the popular Power-Pole hydraulic shallow-water anchoring system. Curl Hill Marketing Projects Coordinator reports that J.L. Marine has been working on a trolling motor for several years, but wouldn’t reveal specifics. “We won’t release it until it’s completely ready for the market. There are a lot of steps yet to be accomplished.”

interesting, I really don’t have any ideas on things that companies can improve on or any cool new features…

I would like to see a MK vantage with spot lock, but do not think it will ever happen.
I could see humminbird dropping some ‘live’ stuff soon too.

My bet is that a lot of the next advancements are in convenience. The auto deploy and stow will expand throughout many brands and models. I agree with Joe and the wireless portion as well. The remotes will continue to be upgraded.

As far as output, I’d be shocked if brands don’t start “one-upping” each other in the power/lb force department as boats continue to get bigger. There’s going to be a day in the near future where kicker motors start becoming old technology, and everything can be done from the bowmount including trolling upstream or in steady rollers for hours on end in 20’+ boats. (Yes, the highest end bow mounts can pull cranks and move big boats already, but that will only become more efficient). “Why spend $2500-$3000+ getting a gas kicker rigged up how you’d like, when for a measly $5000, you can have a bow mount that does both jobs more efficiently)
