Had this visitor in my yard the other day. I figured out what it is. Curious if anyone knows off the top of their head.

Wow that’s interesting looks like some species of hummingbird. Be interested to know what it is. I’ve never seen one.
Is it a hummingbird moth? I’ve heard of them.

A big ass moth of some sort. Don’t know the species though, saw one last year in our flowers too!

Ice Cap is right, it is a hummingbird moth. They are more common than you think. If you search google you will also see Bumblebee Moth. I see them in my hedge a few times each summer. Mine seem to hang around a few days at a time.

That fan-like tail helps suggest its a Hummingbird Moth. Most other moths have blunt or rounded bodies at that point.

Sphinx Moths are very common late in the evening and into the night in this area and are another very large nectar-feeding moth.

Holy cow, that thing is huge! I’ve heard of sphinx months but I’ve never seen one in person. Glad you were able to get a photo, Matt! That’s pretty.

At the old place I remember seeing them at twilight. The first time I saw one it sort of freaked me out because of the hum of the wings as I passed the flower pot in the backyard. I could barely make out something moving, Pretty cool dudes.

Ooh, thats neat, I was gonna say it was a hummingbird that ran up a moths butt and got stuck. But I’m also Iowaboy1’s wife so my sense of humor is warped lol

On some years we have had tons of them if we planted flowers. I don’t remember the yellow stripes being so bright. IT is easy to mistake them for hummingbirds.
