Have you ever maid up a recipe on the fly that turned great with no record of it?

Ell Ya, We have a funny story here at our house!

“She Who Must Be Obeyed” and me, was doing deep fried chicken a few (well several) years ago now. I had purchased my Stainless Steel turkey fryer from BPS here. I’d had it a year or 2. I kept it in the original box, kept he cardboard separation plastic bags etc to allow the new looking to exist as long as possible when it’s stored. Who doesn’t do that, right??

Any hoot, pulled it out SWMBO’s parents were coming for a Sunday chicken dinner. Got to impress the In-Laws ya know! So I had it all set up on the deck, poured in the peanut oil and set the lid on it for bird poop protection and waited for the guests to arrive.

Came time, I fired the bunner. Cooked the yard bird pieces and had maybe the best fried chicken that even the guests exclaimed they ever had! NO Kidding!! Later pulled in the pot and let it cool off for the night.

Went to filter the oil and noticed a dark area in the bottom. And what was that smell! Drained quite a bit but the dark bottom was not separating or blending in with what I was filterating off. WTH is that, that seems to be lurking in the bottom of the pot?

O Wholey Carp!! A piece of the cardboard packing that I kept in the bottom of the pot that seperated the pots to protect them, well I hadn’t removed it! I’ve never been able to replicate the chicken since. And I won’t cut a piece of card board for the bottom of the pot.

So Denny O’s famous “Card Board Chicken” was born! True story not kidding. Just ask SWMBO or me!

Chicken thighs tonight with roasted broccoli and cauliflower. Chicken still needs about 20 minutes to crisp up

well yea and no. i cut back in the honey…….. just not a fan. next time i wont use any at all. the dijon musturd i’m not so sure about about yet. they were good though and will do them again.

the 4 tbsp of butter is alot, so next time i’ll cut it back to 3. i did add garlic salt, i know it said powder but didnt have any. wife had a deli pack of a ham turkey combo so we made 6 of each, when i do it again we will use striaght up ham not the honey ham. i may try a different cheese to to vary it a little. probably add a little extra meat too!!!!! the other thing i mat try is mixing the meats, we had seperate ham and turkey….i may combine them. kinda like a club sammich!

thanks again for posting that reciepe..pretty simple, quick and tasty!!!!! waytogo waytogo

Is the trick is to cut the whole dinner roll as one top and one bottom then dress em up, bake and cut into individual servings after they come out of the oven?

That’s what I did was cut the whole top off before cooking and cut individually after cooking

Yep! I don’t pull the rolls apart during assembly, but rather use a knife to slice the rolls in half as you would slice a bagel, separating the tops from the bottoms. Then after they come out of the oven you can use a spatula to chop them up into individual sandwiches.

I posted the recipe here https://www.in-depthoutdoors.com/community/forums/topic/ham-and-swiss-sliders/ for those interested. smile

I think that would be fun too! Either turkey/ham combo, or maybe a roast beef with provolone? There are so many possibilities!

Thanks, it’s just smooth expanded steel. I heat it up and season it a couple times with cooking oil before using for the first time.
