What’s your experience or interests in? Are you motivated to make as much money as possible or is time off and work/life balance more important? Feel free to PM me if you want to answer privately, I work in insurance with a lot of businesses and most of them are hiring.

I have been in alc/bev sales for about 20 years now. Was a good industry to be in pretty recession proof. Started at distributor sales and transitioned into supplier side. Been with 2 of the 3 largest wine and spirits companies in the world. Won many awards and I have had a ton of success in the industry it has just changed a lot over the years and I feel myself using my brain less and less each year. Have done everything from sales, marketing finance account management to division sales manger to regional sales manager. With most large corporations one down year industry wise and panic sets in from bad leadership. So here I am questioning whether I would to keep pursuing for another 20 or make a change.

To answer your question worm. I guess it depends on the company industry and such. Made good money in my career so far. No problem working hard for the cheddar but also have a family that I enjoy being around and are worth more than any kind of financial gain.

Check your balance sheet to make sure you can afford a career change. Wanting a career change and being ready to take the paycut that would come with most isn’t always appealing when you get right down to pulling the pin.

Balance sheet is good. No amount of money would make me go through life unhappy. Just not worth it IMO.

I have been in IT for over 30 years. I found out that I really enjoyed working directly with data and have been a Data Engineer ever since.

I’ve worked for the same company for 19 years. I started out as the Admin Asst, then worked in Human Resources, and now work in Accounting. All the while doing basic IT Support as well. Accounting is where I’m meant to be and I love it! It’s pretty cool when you get to try different roles within the same company.
I say give something a try! Each job you don’t like gets you a step closer to the right one. waytogo

I spent time in a laboratory, manufacturing, and eventually landed in Global regulatory affairs. Spent a short time managing EHS at two manufacturing sites but the workers comp side of that coin is absolutely terrible. Back in global regulatory affairs, specifically chemical compliance as it relates to import and export of goods from many countries.

It pays well. A lot of dollars ride on doing the job correctly, but it’s not inherently difficult the nice part is nobody wants to do it so it leaves room for those of us who don’t mind. Just need to be good at reading government legalese and translating it to real-world actions. What does that mean, What can we do, what can we not do, oops we did something what do we do now.

The one thing I’m constantly amazed by is how many corporate types are absolutely terrified of making a real decision; big or small, just choosing a path and sticking to it seems to be completely foreign to about 85% of the workforce.

Lots of jobs in the trades. Not sure of your age, young enough for it to make sense amd join a union. Many spots open making 100k plus a year. Excellent benefits for you and the entire family plus great pension plans.
I would be lost in your shoes, I’ve specialized in my field for the last 17 years, it would be intimidating doing a full career change. Godd luck buddy.

Last 2 years – Manager of Maintenance Planning and Reliability in Pharmaceutical Manufacturing. I oversee the scheduling of preventive and reactive maintenance of highly complex manufacturing equipment and systems. Also responsible for evaluating equipment reliability to improve OEE.

    Best job ever!

Overall – been in chemical manufacturing since ’86 holding a variety of positions from QC Lab tech to managing several sterile manufacturing processes.

Customer Service for 32 years (and the last one), although it is not a field for everyone, and how companies manage their customer service goes a long way towards what you can actually do at times to help solve issues / problems in my experience. And yes, not everything can be done via ” self – service” websites, contrary to whatever any company says .. trust me there, humans are still needed.

First job after of my 2 years of involuntary service in the army was with a land surveyor. First boss was a bachelor with not much ambition. Left that job when I got to work one day and the IRS was there. Next surveyor was a teacher who wasn’t around most of the day except in summer when he put on his boss hat. The job wasn’t much fun in the winter either, so I got a factory job. Worked my way up from machinist to stupidvisor to tool designer and finally manufacturing engineer.
Retired after 40 years there when they moved the factory to Mexico. I had a good pension and 401K account so it worked out pretty well for me. Not so good for the younger folks who had to find another job.

14 years in the boating industry, and about 12 years in my current role. I started out helping techs troubleshoot, and then found my way into my current position as a technical rep working with boat builders. Below is a couple projects I’ve helped with, and a good example of my office view during most of the open water season.

Me personally, I disagree with that statement.
For me you need to ask yourself –
How long do you have to be unhappy and what is the reward for that?

Are you unhappy for a week and receive $1M for that?

Flooring; installed it, serviced it, sold it since 85. Now an estimator for a commercial company. Can’t think of a day I was ever “excited” to get to work. However, the industry has afforded me the opportunity to do all the things I do get excited for, for that I am grateful.

I’m an adult babysitter. (ie Production Manager) I manage all the aspects of our hard good manufacturing. Metal shop, wood shop, assembly areas, set up, etc.

I’ve been a design engineer in the agricultural field, ambulances and rescue vehicles, NHRA and Nascar racing trailers. Some fun industries. In my current employment worked up from mfg engineer, to supervisor, to manager. I’ve been here for 20 years and hopefully can stick it out for 7-10 more before retirement. When I started, we were owned by a private owner. Since he passed about 12 years ago, we have been shuffled from on investment group to another, and probably about to go to another. The stress has increased.

I also have my own side business that Eelpout Guy keeps me as busy as I want to be. (Maybe a bit more than I want to be), but that is my de-stress work were I’m not dealing with employees.

In 1993, shortly after HS, I started as a delivery driver and order picker for an electrical parts distributor in Chicago. I spent about 9yrs going from that role to warehouse manager and then inside sales for about 3.5yrs. Moved to WI in mid-2002 and have been in inside sales for another electrical distributor since then.

I owned a rental company for 30 years. Son wanted nothing to do with taking it over, so I sold everything. I switched to being a project manager for a commercial drywall/ stucco company. We dropped the drywall division two years ago, and now I am dealing with insurance companies sad , bidding commercial stucco and EIFS work.
