Theres a really good wired to hunt podcast episode 543 where they talk to a deer vision specialist. Apparently the main reason they can react so fast is based on them interpreting time slower than we do. Its a very interesting listen. Also it makes a difference on alert deer vs non alert. But at that distance it would be tough not to stop them.

Was looking at buying a phase 4 or the new prime bow (still am) because im looking to upgrade from a 22 year old bow. Buying a new AC unit put a halt to that for this year.

Have the rubber strips between limbs on the phase 4 wearing out yet? thats one nervous spot for me

No issues for me after a full winter 3D league season and many arrows this summer. I will say the tophats are a bit harder to push out of the limbs compared to my V3 but that really isn’t an “issue”, just an observation.

I shot 2 different hoyt bows today and I can say I fell in love with the vtm 34, and the z1s. I didn’t shoot the others because it’s to much money for a bare bow. But the vtm may be in my future.

I bought a Bear Execute a couple months ago.
I shot a few different bows before settling but I’m not looking back now.

I have a bowtech rein 6 with a Schaffer XV rest and apex sight. I use gold tip arrows with NAP spitfire mechanical broadheads. I haven’t bow hunted the last couple years but would like to get back out if I can find the time.

    NAP spitfire mechanical broadheads.

I hear so many bad stories about mechanical broadheads. Not necessarily the ones you mentioned, but even the hunting public did a complete video on why they refuse to use them. I wish you good luck. No fun wounding a deer and not able to recover it.

The problem is the mechanicals are great and leave huge blood trails and that deer dies fast. But every once in a while if they don’t open then it’s bad news. But I’ve seen lots of people claim they didn’t open and it ended up being a bad gut shot.
The fixed blades are always open. But a montec g5 does leave the wound a mechanical will and I’ve seen the little to no blood trail on a arrow that doesn’t pass through. So really comes down to what you prefer. I’ve seen the g5 get clotted up and I’ve seen a hypodermic leave what looked to be a murder scene. I shoot g5s but my first shot on Saturday if I get the opportunity will be with a hypodermic

I’m really curious to see if cross bows make a big difference in hunting pressure this year. I guess we’ll see in a few days.

I shoot a hand me down Hoyt Carbon Matrix. Still gets the job done after years of abuse, but after this year it may be time to upgrade finally.

Id bet the first week maybe. Then the public will be pretty empty.

I normally shoot my Matthews vxr28 but just noticed that I have a thin bad spot in the string that I feel is not safe to shoot as is right now until I get the string replaced. so, for now, if I want to get out before I get it replaced, I will just use my Ravin R10. lesson learned always check you string and cables in the summer when you have time to get them replaced without having to try and rush to get it done if needed.

These days my broad head of choice is a SevR both 1.5” and 2” cut. The only way those broad heads won’t open is if the practice set screw is left in.
The main reason I went to a mechanical is they are simply more accurate (forgiving). When I say that if I torque my bow it will affect my poi. However it is a lot less with a field tip or mechanical.

Sure when on the range it’s easy to focus 100% on every shot. However in the heat of the moment in a hunting situation things can get over looked and rushed.

Some say an animal will run harder and farther when hit with a mechanical compared to a fixed blade. That could very well be true. However the shortest I have ever had an animal go was 25 yards and that was with a Rage back in 2009.
The other talking point is a mechanical will put more blood on the ground. Once again that could very well be true. However the best blood trail I ever had was with a VPA 125 grain vented broad head. Not entirely sure what all was cut but I had a red carpet for 80 yards to the buck. He hardly had any blood in him when I field dressed him. Shot was 1/4 too. Entrance was right behind shoulder and exit was at his junk.

    That’s a horrible group for a ravin.
Are you shooting different arrows to make this group? Or not using a scope?

My r10 will put the same arrow in the same hole at 60.

Check your fetching to see if they’re straight. Little hot water will fix em.

Still plenty good for hunting. Our R10 shop bow will probably maintain 2″ groups at that distance but it’s also gotten 1 gazillion bolts shot through it.

Or shooting free hand. I pretty much always shoot off of a rest/bipod with my R10 and I never shoot at the same target twice! (anymore whistling rotflol )

Your manual will tell you to restring at 400 shots.
I restrung mine after the first year when it was used up to 400x. Had to tune a bit with new strings. No big deal. I have the press. Obviously something your aware of if running a shop. Sounds like it may be overdue. Surprised the serving is in good shape.

I went the opposite direction and got a couple horse bows. Now I am learning traditional style with no rest or shelf or knock and using a thumb release lol. I thought it would be easier to get the hang of since it didn’t take long to figure out how to shoot instinctive with my paintball set up on my compound. I was wrong about that.

Oh I’m fully aware, we use that bow for a lot of testing so it’s had many many new string/cable sets put on it.
