Borrowing money then not paying it back. What are some other great lessons we can teach the younger generations that help build our future?
June 28, 2023 at 7:55 pm #2210948Man you’re relentless Dutch. Why not just post every inflammatory news article on IDO? Oh wait you do….

I try to think of it like your favorite local pub, with the same group of guys shooting the $hit sitting around the bar table having a few drinks.
Sometimes it’s fun to sit at that table and partake. Other times it’s more fun to play pool, or sit at another table by the TV with the sportsball game playing.June 28, 2023 at 10:44 pm #2211030MOST topics are welcome. Posts of political or religious nature will be deleted.
If anyone is still in charge of this site, please delete this
mission statement from the header of the General Discussion forum, and let it be known that anything goes here.Alternatively, please create a “Politics and Religion” forum and restrict all of this crap to there so I can continue to talk to other normal people about fishing, the outdoors, and other things that matter.
There are a million places and other cesspools for this kind of discussion, this doesn’t need to be one of them.

The fact that posting this news release from our federal government is inflammatory to you says a lot.

June 29, 2023 at 7:25 am #2211043Isn’t the Supreme Court expected to make a decision on student loans any day here? This just seems mostly irrelevant until that decision is made.

If you don’t like it pass over it. Ever drive by a billboard you didn’t agree with.

Pardon my ignurunce, but as I understand this statement, is it “abnormal” to expect someone to pay back what he’s borrowed? Especially when it’s “normal” folks who are left on the hook for his unpaid debt? This gets even worse when you consider the number of kids who take out “student loans” and use them to fund things like new cars, or fancy vacations, anything but tuition or books

I don’t recall where I saw it, but it was on my google homepage showed an article that said they’re deciding as early as this morning, or by mid day tomorrow. Guess we’ll just wait and see…
I’m pretty young yet. I could benefit $10k from this relief plan. But I’m still against it.

June 29, 2023 at 9:10 am #2211077I think it was $742 Billion that was forgiven for PPP Loans by the Fed Govt according to the SBA. $42B for college kids that were somewhat victims of predatory educational costs?
Ill happily take the $10K while some old geezers on IDO steam about ethics.
June 29, 2023 at 9:15 am #2211079I think I should get a bunch of money for lost wage compensation for the last 30 years cause after high school I couldnt afford to go to college.

Inflammatory? It’s from the government. I could see if he was posting Tucker Carlson or Alex Jones videos. Lighten up and maybe ignore Dutchys posts from now on.
June 29, 2023 at 9:28 am #2211082That article is from early May, and it’s before the SCOTUS right now, so agree with Gim it will be settled soon. I also don’t understand the Dutch Derangement Syndrome some have here, you can weigh in or not or pretend it doesn’t exist.

Think about this for a minute. The “S” in SBA stands for small, as in small business, not mega corporation. Secondly, what was the intention of the PPP loan forgiveness program? To protect businesses, but more importantly, to protect businesses that EMPLOY PEOPLE like you and me. If businesses didn’t keep their payrolls up, they didn’t qualify.
Now, being the master’s student of economics that you are, what makes more sense, to bail out families earning up to $250K/yr for school loans taken out to attend overpriced, over-hyped colleges, or to make sure businesses, with their jobs, don’t fail because of an over-hyped hysteria brought on by COVID?June 29, 2023 at 12:22 pm #2211130<div class=”d4p-bbt-quote-title”>crappie55369 wrote:</div>

I know more than one who has used “student loans” to buy new cars. It makes me sick that they were so easily able to take advantage of a program like this.
June 29, 2023 at 12:31 pm #2211135No ruling on the student loans yet from the Supreme Court. It’ll likely come tomorrow.
However, they did rule on affirmative action being used as criteria for college admission, stating that it violates the 14th amendment. Universities, colleges, and other higher education establishments can no longer use race as criteria for accepting or declining a student applicant. For many years, they did this in order to “diversify” their student body. The two universities cited were North Carolina and Harvard. UNC is the oldest public institution in the country and Harvard is the oldest private one.
Military-style academies are exempt from this ruling.

its more the fact that dutchy loves to stir the pot with topics he know will get the boys buzzin. posts a link to one random article with no other text or commentary, then fades into the background and watches the bees nest swarm after he kicked it.
June 30, 2023 at 10:23 am #2211368The Supreme Court has struck down the Biden Administration’s effort to forgive federal student loans. The court ruled that such a costly undertaking needs congressional approval. Student loans have been on pause since the beginning of the pandemic and they will now resume starting in September.
Additionally, they ruled in favor of a Colorado business owner who refused to offer wedding-related graphic designer services to a same-sex couple on the basis of personal religious beliefs. What this now does is allow small businesses to refuse their service to specific customers on the grounds of religion.
Both cases were in favor of the conservative majority, 6-3.

This one struck me as odd. Maybe I’m wrong but it’s a private business, do they not have the right to refuse service to anyone for just about any reason?
June 30, 2023 at 11:28 am #2211391Maybe I’m wrong but it’s a private business, do they not have the right to refuse service to anyone for just about any reason?
Not on the basis of race, age, gender, etc (obvious discrimination). If someone is being obnoxious or loud at a bar because they’re drunk they can be refused service, but a business cannot flat out refuse someone service for no apparent reason. Its not like the owner of the bait shop is going to start asking people buying minnows if they’re gay and then refuse them if he doesn’t like their response based on religious basis.
This particular case has certain criteria involved because its oriented towards weddings, so the business that serves them would obviously know if it was a gay couple or not.
In most instances this really is not going to have any bearing on the outcome. But in specialized services (like wedding related services), they could now refuse to offer their clients service based on their religious beliefs.
June 30, 2023 at 11:34 am #2211393i see plenty of signs that say no shoes, no shirt no service…..never heard of anyone having a tissie fit over that!!!!!!!
and i disagree to a point, but agree with John……i believe any business does have the right to refuse service to anyone. see those signs alot and never hear any backlash over it.

That’s not discrimination. Someone walking in barefoot to a store or restaurant could create a safety hazard. Same with bringing pets into certain places. Prohibiting a dog in a grocery store isn’t discrimination towards a pet owner; it keeps the food from getting eaten.
No business owner can refuse service to someone SOLELY based on a discriminatory factor like age, race, or gender. What this decision does is allow a business to refuse service to someone based on their religious beliefs. If a bakery or florist wants to now put up a sign stating that they will not provide their wedding services to a gay couple, they can now do that without the threat of being sued.
