Are the 500 series reels too small? I’m looking to catch bigger Walleye and Pike with this setup..
I’m using an Okuma Avenger ABF-500 on my Commander and it seems perfect for me. Not too small at all and seems to match up for a nice balance while jigging.
I like the ABF feature when I use it on some type of set line arrangement for pike (or walleye) using suckers too.
I run strictly 500 series reels on ice rods. I have a 500 Shimano Sienna on my 32″ commander. I don’t really think you need capacity when you are fishing vertical. I feel like my rods balance well with 500 series. You could run 1000 series if you already have them. I don’t think you need designated reels for ice rods. Several guys I fish with just swap out reels from their open water set-ups. I don’t because I need an excuse to own more gear.
I have a shimano 1000 size and it balances nicely. Set it up with mono for sure. For reference, I do have 500 series reels on nearly all of my other ice rods.
