What to do?

The kids get out of school tomorrow so I booked a campsite at Big Bog and planned to fish Upper Red Wednesday-Friday. The winds look like they are going to be pretty bad pretty much the whole time.

What would you guys do? Head up to the Rainy River or head south near Blackduck and try a few of those lakes? I have never fished either open water.

There are some good smaller lakes near Tenstrike that might be worth a look. Island Lake comes to mind.

I know a lot of people fish black duck for sunnies. It’s also a good walleye lake for what it’s worth. You’re less than an hour from some of the best lakes in the state, one of them has to have a non windy shoreline you can fish.

I’d probably try and find a campground near Winnie or Leech. If the weather forecast is wrong, fish the big lakes, if it is too windy you can get on the windward side or find a smaller lake nearby. If you want to stick to Big Bog, I’d probably go the Blackduck route with kids.

Since you are going mid week, you should be able to find a free campground on Vermilion, ideally on an island where they can run around like crazy. Fishing is very good up there right now as well.

Like others I would say blackduck or gillstead would be worth a try. I have heard gull lake by tenstrike is good for sunfish.

This is a great idea, Hinsdale Island has some great campsites and is on the part of the lake that is mostly protected from wind.

If you go to Vermilion which would be my preference over red any day. Call mckinnley in tower. Great campground great people and you are on top of some phenomenal fishing. Let alone a beautiful area.

Looks like we are going to do this. The wife wants electricity so we are looking at Hoodoo Point.

I know nothing about this lake so I guess it will be a learning experience

Wind blow points, reefs and humps in Big Bay right outside Pike Bay should be starting to hold fish. There will likely be a lot of boats in the deeper water around Cherry Island sorting through 12-15″ fish if you just want some small eaters.

Black Duck has a nice healthy Perch population also.

What DaveB said. I’m doing well with slip bobbers on top of humps. Jerkbaits on rocky shorelines are getting Smallies, and some muskies are still hanging in the shallow bays.

You’ll be an hour and half from the Northwest Angle. You can always find some calm waters there and a ton of walleye.

Thank you for the tips – lived in the state for almost 40 years, so it is kind of crazy this will be my first trip.

Hoodoo is a good spot too. Not sure what you are after but you have access to big bay from pike or trailer over to any launch on the lake. Lot of water to go try.

That entire area is good for multiple species.

    Back at work unfortunately.

Just wanted to say thanks to all for the suggestions. Vermilion was definitely the right call. The weather was terrible Wednesday and Thursday, so we never got the boat out until Friday morning for 3 hours before having to back up camp and leaving. I did manage a walleye from camp and my son got a smallie. We fished for walleyes for an hour and half from the boat and did not get one and then decided to cast shorelines with raps and caught for smallies in the 1.5 hours of boat time.

Despite the weather it was great time and I definitely want to get back up there and explore that beautiful lake. Being only 3 hours away is also a plus.

That is a great lake and lots of fish to be caught. Some of my favorite times are just out cruising with the family and exploring, not even fishing. My lady loves that the boy and I can get up and go fish and she takes the daughter to ely for a day of shopping and exploring that area.
