The question that has to be answered is this: Can the demands of Islam and its followers ever be compatible with westernized cultural, political, and social norms?

Probably not. Hasn’t changed in hundreds of years.

I don’t understand what the demands of Islam are that are not compatable?
As the Christian faith differs from the Jewish faith the Islam faith difffers the same. Thay all are similar to each other when you compare them to other.

It is what some–in fact, one could argue many–see as the fact that Islam demands that followers avenge anything that they see or interpret as an insult to Islam or the prophet.

There is no other religion on the scale of Islam that has a mandate that is similar and that their followers are so willing to carry out using violence. If someone were to insult Jews, or Catholics, or Druids for that matter with newspaper cartoons, there might be a series of Facebook posts, some hashtag activism, and maybe even a protest march.

Do something that is seen to insult Islam and there’s a bombing or mass shooting. And often the victims had nothing to do with the act, it’s a general terroristic lash-out at “society” as we saw with London and the 7/7 bombings.

Is this view that religious insults provide justification for murder ever going to be compatible with western culture and societal norms?

Qur’an and Islamic law clearly and unequivocally forbid terrorism. Terrorism= murder.
    Murder is also forbidden.

The Islamic state or Al-Qeada do not represent the Islamic faith no matter what they say. So if your refearing to their interpretation of the Qur’an than yes they wont fit in the western world or any other part of the world.
Ive never heard of this mandate outside these extremist groups.

We’ve heard this over and over again and I think most would agree that it is of very little comfort to those murdered.

It also seems to beg the question. Is there a * behind those statements in the minds of Muslims? Murder is forbidden*.

*Unless the murder is committed to avenge an insult to the faith or the Prophet. In which case, it’s all good.

I understand the basics of what Islam claims to be as a faith. I also understand that many followers of Islam seem especially prone to commit acts of extreme violence as a reaction to things that western culture and social norms support and encourage.

We’re talking about people killing people because of cartoons here. I think it’s right to ask hard questions about just how willing and committed Muslims are to abiding by the cultural and social norms of the countries where they have chosen to live?

After watching the evening news there are 3 more guys looking for the virgins. Although I suspect in Hell they are more likely to find old skanky women.

Kudos to the French, job well done. Now find the tramp that got away.

I agree with the kudos. They contained them and killed them in quick fashion.

The extremists are Muslims in the same way the Westboro Baptist church are Christians. IMHO, you are always going to have fringe elements to any religion, and not much can be done to stop it.

True. This is why I hate them both equally. However there is no Westboro trying to set up an Islamic state through torture, beheadings and terrorism. Ok, maybe if the tables were turned, but they are not. There is no moral equivalency here. There are also a lot of Christian who stand up to and protest Westboro when they try pulling their stunts.
