What size rippin raps do you guys like to use open water? I have been fishing blades the last few times out and wanted to try out some rippin raps.
A 26″ from last week on a blade.

Awesome fish!!!
The keeper size eyes earlier this week had 2-3″ minnows in their tummy. But in fall I will still typically throw larger baits, but this year with so much forage I’m not going to be afraid to throw smaller stuff.
I was wondering the same thing as I want to try some Rippin Raps in place of blades. I was planning to the the 2 1/2″ (size 6 I think) that are 1/2oz

I have played around with the #4 pitching/casting to wing dams and rocky shore lines with some success, for the deeper waters I have used #5-#7 . there are definitely part of my spring/fall arsenal !
Don’t forget to use the #4 for ice fishing Walleyes !
i went 2 3/4″. i figured i’m using 4″ moxies which have a huge profile. the one thing i would caution is that unless you have a lure retriever plan on losing ALOT of them. sure i lose alot of blades but i can make those for around a buck to a buck fifty. jigging and ripping raps vertical jigging on the river gets expensive!
my last limit of eyes on the miss came at the cost of about 6 of them.
I use the #6 from 5′ down to about 12 f.o.w. If I want to target deeper fish I go with the #7.
Maybe try a plain Jigging Rap with a minnow head vertical right now. These can take quite a few fish in open water but seem to get shuffled back into ice tackle. If you get set up in a slow drift, try these too.
Perfect timing for this question. I was planning on adding some Rippin Raps to my tackle bag for dual duty on ice and in the boat.

I did some of this while anchored below the dam on pool 9 last week… mid sized, white one I found available in the box that wasn’t packed away with the ice stuff… and it worked very well. There wasn’t any just tapping it… when they hit, it was a nice thud.
I was able to find a few fish on #6’s last night. First one was actually in the first few minutes.
I have caught a TON of eyes on the Rippin Raps, especially in milder flow. I generally use 5-6 size, depending on the depth…The 4s shine when the big girls are up on shallow sand flats in the early spring.
I prefer a 7’to 7’6″ ML soft tipped rod with a fast/X fast action for casting the 4s due to the smaller hooks (LEX 70MLXF) on 6# Sufix 832
Vertical jigging the 5/6s I am back to a LTW 6’8″ MXF
LOVE fishing rippin raps and jigging raps in open water. 90% of the time I use #6 rippin raps and #7 jigging raps. I generally pitch the rippin rap and vertical jig the jigging rap. I use a 68mxf St. Croix with braided line and a flouro leader for both applications.

I only fish the upper end of pool 4 and I have found a use for All sizes 4,5,6,and 7 !
I agree Ben…tried to get James over to the Menominee River several years ago
because they were so effective catching big walleye while boats around us were struggling with live bait.
The 2015 video on the Oconto and Peshtigo Rivers was filmed near the end of the spawning run when the temps were up enough to raise the activity level of those big girls…especially the many spawned out females that were inhaling those #7s
Early season, cold water, #5s…or casting the sand flats
Most of the rest of the run…#6s
