Run Engine Tuner through it or similar de-carb product to give it a good clean. Doesn’t hurt to replace plugs after that. Cheaper oils just seem to not burn off as well. I’ve ran resolute through my 2 last Johnson 2 strokes and was happy with it. Switched to Amsoil just bc I backtroll quite a bit and less smoke/fumes, if not for that might’ve stuck with other.

Use way more oil since last fall upgrading motor size and use this just bc it’s readily available, cheap, and has a bit less smoke than resolute. Happy so far.

^^^ I buy that same oil at Home Depot for $17 a gallon. Best price I have found, as Walmart was around $18 last time I checked. Great stuff for the price.

I used to be an Amsoil guy and ran it in everything, just didn’t notice the huge difference with the two stroke stuff as it just burns off anyway. I try to run full synthetic in all my 4stroke stuff however.

I don’t think you’ll go wrong with the stuff above but I use Amsoil in my 2002 150. I’ve run well over 1500 miles since I bought the boat in 2014. I’ve only put the Johnson/Evinrude brand oil and Amsoil in it.

I also put up to 100 miles a day on my motor when I go to Isle Royale. I don’t want anything to jeopardize my trips out there.

I remember when I owned a 2003 Merc 125 ELPTO 2+2 motor I only ran Merc oil. The one time I put cheaper oil in it I thought it started on fire.

From there on high quality synthetic only in my marine motors.

Before someone that knows nothing about VRO systems chimes in and says disconnect it, do NOT disconnect it. The VRO is a tremendously reliable system. People who say the VRO failed and wrecked the engine know nothing about the VRO and how it works.

Totally agree with Penzoil recommendation. Back when 2 strokes were still common in the saltwater/offshore scene, I asked on a forum about the best, low smoke oil. Pennzoil Premium Plus was the recommendation by about 5 to 1 over any other brand.

That means something because many of these saltwater guys were going through 10-20 CASES or more of 2 stroke oil per year. CASES, not gallons. Freshwater midwest anglers don’t use a boat for an hour for every 10 these guys put on. These Gulf guys were running twins or triples and using 5+ gallons of oil per weekend.

When I was running Dyno oil in my 2 strokes Evinrude a 60HP and 150 XP I blew both motors due to carbon build up around the rings Once I switched to a full synthetic never had the issue with carbon build up. Me I have used Amsoil HP for the last 20 odd years and have never had a major engine Falure.
