Went mushroom hunting today. Found enough morels for a couple meals. We need rain and heat. Anyways I found lots of the mushrooms pictured below. I think I know what they are. Please advise if you know. Appreciate your help. I believe the ones on the bottom are the same species, just juveniles.

Top two I would say are Hen of the Woods mushrooms which are good to eat.

    Bottom photo I don’t know.

Arent Hen of the Woods a Fall mushroom? That is when I have picked them before. I thought was Chicken of the Woods, but is not. These have fins on their bottom side. Appreciate your input.

That looks like oyster mushrooms. They grow on wood. They have continuous gills to the base. Really good eats. The ones with the frayed and brown edges are old.

Iowa Josh, I was looking at guides online and thought it may be an oyster. It was growing on a dead elm. So were the young ones on the bottom, just not the same dead elm. It does have the gills on the bottom. How to prepare and cook?

Once you are sure of identity, yes. I think they need more cooking time than other mushrooms. I get a little brown on them with a little oil and then put a quartered onion in the pan until the edges of the onion soften and put the results on a nice steak. Melt some blu cheese in there if you like that. It is marvelous.

I’ve topped pasta with them also. They do add their flavor to the dish if you cook them in it. They do add quite a bit to a beef stew base.

If the bottom of the “stem” is hard, cut it off. There is a bunch of fiber in mushrooms so if you eat a bunch at once it is a fiber bomb and those harder stems seemed to be the culprit.

I wish I would have found with someone who knows more about them than I do. Im just not confident to cook and eat them. Hopefully someone will know for sure.
    Thank you all.

Totally agree with Iowa Josh above on the two top pics. I’d be Leary of the bottom pic. Get a good reference book. I think GOOGLE can be helpful. I really like the oysters, spring, summer, fall Here in Iowa. Iowa State U. puts out a nice reference book.

Bottom one is Golden Oyster. First two pics look like old golden, but I’m not the expert.
You’re in the QCA, look up “Wild Growth Gourmet Mushrooms” on FB and shoot him those pics. It’s my brother, he’s a mushroom nerd and will steer you right.

One of my favorite quotes – “There are old mushroom hunters and there are bold mushroom hunters. But there are no old, bold mushroom hunters.” )

Good luck! I would love to be more comfortable with my foraging skills, but outside of Morels and Chanterelles, I kind of stay away. I need to take some time to do more reading on identifying wild shrooms.

Lund78. What state are you in? If you find chanterelles in Iowa we need to talk.

Minnesota. Find them occasionally. One of the easiest to identify, not only by their appearance, but by their almost fruity smell.

They’re not in Iowa??? I thought they were a pretty prolific ‘shroom?

Oh- and I need to add puffballs to my comfort list, although I don’t particularly like them. They’re fine but kind of flavorless, takes on what flavor of what you cook them with. Tofu of the woods!

I really appreciate all of your input. What I believe I have settled on is that the top 2 are Elm Oysters. And the bottom are Golden Oysters. I am open to further help. Thanks Again.

INaturalist is an app. Take a picture, add details/location and the app suggests what type of plant/bird/animal/fish/snake/mushroom it is. If you open it up to the public, others will confirm it.

I don’t think there was a charge for it, but I’ve had it for a few years and might not remember if there was a cost.

Thanks for posting. I will be in the timbers soon bowhunting. Will keep my eye open. Might even just go squirrel and mushroom hunting one day. Thanks again, enjoy. I love the Hens even more than morels. Chickens are ok. I just got done growing some oysters on my kitchen counter, was fun. I ate some. Ive had my fill of them. Going to shallow bury them in my yard in moist, shaded area and see if nature will take over.

Well I could have had a interesting fishing trip then. My Google machine didn’t work up there to double check.

You must live under a rock or in the 80’s LOL
On the google App there is a little camera icon you click on and it turns on your camera on then what ever you take a picture of it pulls up google searches of that item, weather it a dog a mushroom or anything.
