My buddy has a permanent out of Lybacks in some trophy walleye and pike waters. It’s not a numbers game there but when you get a flag it’s usually a 25+ walleye or 35+ pike. Last year I broke off quite a few fish on my trips. Wondering what lb test fluoro leader line you like to use on trophy lakes for pike and walleye? I was thinking 15 lb should be ok.

I use 10# Berkley micro ice, I’ve been bit off a few times in the past, lots of muskie’s where I fish. Good luck !

My 2 cents a small pike has very little space between the teeth , they will cut your line quicker, more so then a large pike. I use 10 pound test fluorocarbon . Yes you will get bit off now and then, but not alot, don’t horse the fish. Just a quick snap of the wrist to set the hook,no need to go crazy on the hook set, their is no drag in your hand . DK

I guess I’d decide if you’re targeting pike or walleyes. If you’re targeting walleye, I’d go with the lighter fluoro or straight mono and set your bait near bottom.

If your trying for big pike, set the bigger bait higher in the water column and yes…I’d use something like what eyeguy54 pictured.

I’d personally go with 40# minimum. I’d make some quick strike rigs out of 40-60# floro. Got this one on one of my quick strike rigs in Wahkon bay pike fishing as well as several mid 30” pike.

I think that’s my issue. I want to stay invisible enough for the walleye but strong enough to stand up to a big pike and they are both around this spot. Thanks for the advice.

I’d go with 25 or 30# floro. I’ve used that walleye fishing open water and ice where pike are a concern. It should handle pike and the aggressive walleye won’t notice it.

If you want to keep the line lighter but have pike around try switching to circle hooks. Pike break line when it is dragged over their teeth. A circle hook will catch on the edge of thier jaw, most of the time, and the hook shaft, rather than line will be in their teeth. Still a chance the pike will roll and the gill plate will cut you off but I’ve personally had far fewer break offs since switching hooks. Just a thought. Good luck and tight lines.

Use true leader material, like Seaguar Blue Label.

    I’d use 20lb minimum.

Yep. That’s the stuff I use too.

Don’t worry too much about being invisible. It’s severely overrated.

I use 10# fluorocarbon for walleyes, and on occasion when I fish pike, it’s 20# fluorocarbon. It’ll get scuffed and need to be retied if a pike gets a hold of it, but it’ll hold.
