Need for tax purposes. The number we thought it was doesnt jive with this info from the last closing. I was hoping those familiar with this data presentation could help me. We remember it being 2900. Thank you.

The square footage is based on the finished area for taxes. So your utility room or cold storage area would not count against the taxable amount of area you have. It’s a good thing if their number is lower than what you have. They add up the sq footage of your house by the outside. So if you measure on the inside of your basement room you need to add 4”-6” for the wall and another 12” for block or something like that depending on your home.

Looks like they ae counting garage area and all the inside area also, Like Rodwork said unfinished areas are not counted for tax purpose.

FYI – The Accessor will ask you one question. Could you sell your property for what we have you listed at? Then it’s up to you to prove them wrong or maybe right.
Sq. footage is just one of many factors involved in determining property value.

Our house is 2800 finished and our taxes are $4750.00 and our property value went up $74,700 in a year. That seems a bit high

Hope you filed a property tax rebate that year.

FYI, If the ceiling in the basement isn’t finished, it’s not considered living space.

If the market value jumped, it should have jumped for nearly everyone else in the area, so the mil rate should have seen a commensurate decrease. Compare the milrates of the last several years. An increase in property value alone shouldn’t trigger a huge increase in taxes owed because everyone values increase. The city/state spending shouldn’t be increasing at the same rate as the housing market because housing prices are based on supply and demand. Right now there’s more demand than supply.

Not really for selling purposes. Its to determine the percentage of my office space to write off for my business. Used to be you could write off home offices. I did that for years. Then once it got popular they put an end to it. Now than I run my own business from my house I can write off that expense again. That percentage of every house expense is included. Utilities, water, etc.
