What is the magic FPE?

Okay….. I’m attracted to the ballistics of the 10mm round. I know Suzuki shoots this and seems to really like it. So yesterday, I purchased a Gen 4 Glock 20 in 10mm. How effective is this round, truthfully, against predators? I keep seeing on various outdoor shows and write ups about how a 10mm will effectively defend against anything on the North American continent. The hottest factory load I’ve come across delivers 728 FPE at the muzzle, using 180gr. bullets. How much energy is needed to put down a grizzly or polar bear? The commonly used 454 Casull can deliver up to 1700 FPE with 240gr. bullets. That’s a heck of a gap so…. can I believe what I’m hearing or should a person always use a round that delivers “X” amount of FPE when venturing the wilds of North America?

There’s no way they are that awesome. I have seen shooting comparisons with the .44 mag and the 44 wins on real world penetration and damage. I think the deciding factor is round capacity easy to shoot.

Buffalo Bore is claiming 1350fps, producing 728fpe at the muzzle, with 180gr. bullets. I’m not opposed to finding out the truth so if you got a chronograph and some time in about a week or so to shoot, let’s do it! Liberty also makes a self-defense round that claims a 60gr. bullet moving @2400fps, produces 780fpe.

It’d be interesting to see what these rounds are actually moving at….

Interesting read along with some nice links. After seeing this, I’m inclined to carry a snubby 454 Casull in grizzly country but the 10mm should make a nice defense carry anywhere grizzlies are absent. I like the 10mm link that shows the muzzle speed of that round out of the very gun I plan to use. That’s awesome!

Being of the large frame they are easy to shoot too.
I’m using Buffalo Bore in my 10 but dont have the box with specs.
I also carry my .40 when hunting with Double Tap 200 grain solid points at 1100 fps. I put in a heavier spring to handle them.

I bought up 500rds from LAX that should be pretty standard shooting. I can’t wait to take her out and see how she shoots! Ordered up some of the recommended Buffalo Bore 10mm and 9mm from Vizard’s. They had a much better price on the stuff. They also had Remington Express Long Range 3″ #6 .410 – 25/bx on sale for only $9.71/bx! If you know anyone looking…. there’s some good prices coming from them right now.

I could always carry one of my .41mag revolvers but they’re so heavy for a carry piece. Shoot like a dream and I’ve bullseyed the irons @50yds but again, the Raging Bulls are heavy.

Oh look…… turkeys in my yard! So tempting to get a fall tag…….
