What is the easiest and best line to line knot?

Notice I put easiest first-I lost a huge bass (23”) to a line to line connection that broke, so I swore this off for years.
Some questions how often do you retie? Is tying to a swivel better? what size or brand of swivel?
Does it help to add superglue? Just name the knot I can look up how to tie it.

Alberto. Started using it last year for braid to floro. Can’t say if it’s the “easiest” because I’m not very good at tying most knots. But, it has been effective and small enough that you barely notice it going thru the guides.

Improved Albright knot is what I use line to line. Different types or different diameter it works well, and very strong. Easy to tie even for old eyes.

The FG knot is the best I’ve found. Its a little hard to learn to tie, But once you get it down its not to bad. It is by far the smoothest knot coming thru the eyes of the rod. I tie my leader rather long so I can retie several times prior to replacing.

How often I retie – depends on the cover I’m fishing in. If in or around rocks or in a lake with Zebra mussels I’ll retie more often. Just watch the knot for nicks.

I don’t like using a swivel. To me they effect the action of most lures.

Superglue? – It probably cant hurt if you have the time – I hate that stuff – If I get it on my fingers it drives me nuts. If you tie the knot correctly I don’t think you need it.

I like the Alberto for great strength, small size, and very easy to tie

Another vote for Alberto, I wrap 10 times each way. FG looks good too but it seems like it could be tough in rough weather. I’ve tried a few and haven’t lost a fish because of the Alberto knot

Uni to uni for me on 10 lb braid and 10 lb leader.
Any leaders over 20 lb get an fg knot.

I can tie a uni to uni without looking in seconds. The fg takes me a couple minutes. I find the fg to to be unreliable and also unnecessary in lighter tests. Make sure and test your fg knots if your new to it. Most people don’t apply enough tension while tying.

Double Uni is the easiest, Fg I’ve heard is the strongest but not very easy to tie. I did land a 61″ sturgeon a few years ago on 8 lb flouro tied to 10 lb braid with a double uni and it held up fine. Hard to get a better test than that. I have switched since then to the Alberto though. Mostly because it goes through the guides a little smoother. If I’m tying it at home and it has time to dry I’ll add a drop of superglue.

So far alberto wins-looking to tie a 20-25lb leader-is it ok if the leader is thicker than the mainline?
    Thanks

That’s where the Alberto really shines 👍

Fold the leader and wrap the braid

I like the uni-uni for similar diameters, and the Alberto for lines with substantially different diameters.

I’ve watched a couple videos in the past on the FG knot……wayyyy too complicated for what little you gain

Double uni is easy but does not go through the eyes very well. Wish I would have learned a different line to line knot over the winter but once you learn one it’s hard to switch. Take the time and learn the alberto or the fg .

It might sound silly, but learn to use your tongue on a uni and a uni-uni as a third hand (for doing the wraps).

It speeds things up, lubricates the knot, and even impresses the ladies as a bonus toast

Evolution of an Eagle Scout with a line-tying merit badge:

•Started out many years tying Uni to Uni. It was overall “okay” with only a few knot failures.

•Gravitated to a Crazy Alberto, and it was very good.

•Heard the strongest and smallest knot in the world was an FG and tied it for a year.

Bottom line I went back to an Alberto. They say an FG is the smallest knot, and it is until you tie the final half hitch knots which are actually bigger and tick through the guides awkwardly all day. Ironically, the FG is the only knot I have ever get caught in micro-guides. Also, when tying the Alberto, the braid wraps around the fluorocarbon which protects it going through the guides. This prevents small fractures in the brittle fluorocarbon which results in a prematurely broken knot.

You just have to be 100% certain that you go back through the initial loop THE SAME WAY you came in at the end of the Alberto knot. This is critical, or it will slip out. Watch the “Knot Wars” videos on YouTube. Anyone you hear says the Alberto unravels on them finished the final loop the wrong way. I’ve seen guys who say they have it right and they actually go out the opposite way thinking they are doing it right.

No badges here, but I’ve always tied double uni knot for any line to line application. I’ve never had an issue and I tie braid to mono or floro quite often!

Agree, i don’t tie a leader long enough to have to run through the eyes with exception of trolling rods.

    Never an issue.

Replace line when you feel abrasions on it…Or you feel you’ve worked it hard enough.

I hate to have guests lose a beast of a fish to a worn knot or line..So i’ll check or even replace before a trip just to be sure they don’t run into any problems.
I tend to check the line often for abrasions.

I’m on double uni and Alberto wagon myslef. Both are fairly easy to tie once you get the hang of it. Also, haven’t had issues with either breaking off.

Once I learned an easier way to tie the FG it’s the one I use. Works well when running a longer leader.

A couple of good test results:

Best Fishing Knot for Braided Line [Braid to Leader Contest]

    https://www.sportfishingmag.com/strongest-fishing-knots-braid-to-leader/

The ALBRIGHT vs The ALBERTO vs The FG KNOT [Strength Contest]

The FG knot wins in almost every test that I’ve seen done. The FG may be a little harder to learn to tie – But it is by far the strongest and smoothest of all Braid to leader knot

Sorry – It looks like some of the links did not come thru. Just google braid to leader knot test and you will find lots of test results

My vote is uni to uni. Mono to mono five turns. If mono to braid I give the braid seven turns. Never had a failure

I vote uni-to-uni because I can practically tie it with my eyes closed. I’m not sure if it’s ‘The Best”.

As posted before, the FG knot is smaller profile, and sometimes that would be kinda nice.

The body of the FG is thinner than other knots, but when you tie it off with hitch knots, that part is actually thicker than a standard Alberto Knot. I’ve had FG knots hang up in the guides as a result, never with an Alberto. Just my 2 cents..

The Alberto wraps around 2 pieces of leader while the fg just wraps one that’s why the fg is thinner. It’s the go to knot for saltwater jigging and popping around the world. The only connections proven to be as strong or stronger is the pr knot and wind on loop to loop connections.

A surgeons knot is far and away the fastest to tie and easiest to learn. Not saying it’s the strongest but he asked for something easy right. You could teach it to a kid who doesn’t know how to tie his shoes yet.

6 turn for braid and 3 turn for no braid.
