Evolution of an Eagle Scout with a line-tying merit badge:
•Started out many years tying Uni to Uni. It was overall “okay” with only a few knot failures.
•Gravitated to a Crazy Alberto, and it was very good.
•Heard the strongest and smallest knot in the world was an FG and tied it for a year.
Bottom line I went back to an Alberto. They say an FG is the smallest knot, and it is until you tie the final half hitch knots which are actually bigger and tick through the guides awkwardly all day. Ironically, the FG is the only knot I have ever get caught in micro-guides. Also, when tying the Alberto, the braid wraps around the fluorocarbon which protects it going through the guides. This prevents small fractures in the brittle fluorocarbon which results in a prematurely broken knot.
You just have to be 100% certain that you go back through the initial loop THE SAME WAY you came in at the end of the Alberto knot. This is critical, or it will slip out. Watch the “Knot Wars” videos on YouTube. Anyone you hear says the Alberto unravels on them finished the final loop the wrong way. I’ve seen guys who say they have it right and they actually go out the opposite way thinking they are doing it right.
