What is considered "local?"

Governor Walz’s Stay At Home Order indicates that recreational outdoor activities such as fishing are permitted alone or with someone from the same household and that it should be done “locally.” My question is, what do you consider to be local? I live in a western twin cities metro suburb and when I fish locally I consider it to be within an hour of my house. A day trip to Mille Lacs is about 90 minutes one way to the south shore. But a trip to Upper Red Lake and back isn’t really local in my book. What do you consider to be a fishing trip as “local?”

I would consider anything local where I can drive there and back on a tank of gas….

I like the “there and back on a tank of gas” idea. No need to stop for gas or food. Bring a sandwich in a cooler so you don’t need to stop anywhere to eat and practice social distancing at your fishing hole.

I guess I consider “local” as no further than I drive to work, shop, go to church, etc. These are all things I do locally.

I agree with Neal and Paul, but frankly you could easily take it even further. If you bring sanitizing wipes for the pump/keypad at the gas station, the sky is pretty much the limit. That’s what really bugs me about everyone screeching about how people in zone “A” need to stay there and not go to zone “B”. Yes there’s a legitimate danger when a large amount of people migrate to a low population area and don’t follow sanitary procedures. At the same time, how many people from those small towns are still running to the nearest “city” so they can visit a crowded Walmart, Target, or other big box store once or twice a week for supplies?

    Makes sense, good answer.

The tank of fuel thing is highly variable. My truck can go 600 miles on a tank of fuel whereas a mid size SUV might only go 250 towing a boat.

Local is how far you would let your daughter go on her first date.

This actually makes a lot of sense. Local is certainly not a half tank of gas away but I understand the frustration.

just a question………..so I live in stearns county………family has a cabin in Itasca county since 1965……………the locals up there consider us to be somewhat “locals” ??????????????

we are back off the main road 1 mile, the closest cabin to us is a good city block, separated by a patch of woods. we cant see each others places with full foliage……….

in your opinion…..would that be considered going local??????? its generally a 3 1/2 to 4 hour drive.

I’m going to get very bored going from upstairs to the basement gun safe repeatedly for the next couple months.

I guess folks can and will tell themselves what ever they need to hear, to justify what they want to do.

Gives ” free local delivery ” on a pizza order, a whole new meaning.

As long as you go there with everything you need and stay there. But no. That doesn’t make you a local.

I’m betting everyone’s version of local will have a lot to do with how far away the activity they want to do is from them.

I hope local doesn’t mean a few miles. Closest lake is in Iowa and I’m really not in the mood for bullheads.

My cabin is 2 hours away and I cannot visit there. Nor can I pick up one of my two boats there so that I can fish local. Kayaks are there as well. It sucks. Right now I am honoring the SIP for everyones sake. I dont know how I’ll feel about it in the coming weeks.

I heard on channel 5 news this morning specifically for cabin owners “local” means your primary residence.

If you were to go to your cabin and stay. You need to quarantine for 2 weeks right? What if you go straight there, no stops, get boat and kayak, back to your house. I understand it as 2 weeks before you can go out in public around your cabin. Kinda gray area. But if you don’t come in contact with anyone from the area. Should be fine?

I’m thinking since the closest 2 landings to me are about 2 miles away, we should all stay within 3 miles of our homes to be considered “local”. smile

We all know what local is but those who can’t stand it just have to keep pushing the boundaries to fit their needs(wants). We all know that local is the community you live in. Red Wing is not local to me (45 minutes). I’d love to hit the river too but due to my civil duty I won’t.

North Dakota as of today suspended sales of any out of state fishing licenses. No set date for when they will be sold again.

Lots of not locals visiting there cabins this last weekend. I guess people are going to do what there going to do. As long as they understand there is 1 hospital in this county with 7 e.r. beds and limited equipment for all 7 beds. Praying for the best outcome

So if I lived 39.5 miles from the south shore of Mille lacs, once on the lake am I limited to 1/2 mile from shore? jester
