What happens when a person hangs around a fishing site…

    is education.

I just read Dave Orrick post on TwinCities.com about the catch and release sturgeon fishing season.

Well over half the comments were about “why catch and release?”, “what’s the point?” One poster said “I don’t see a point in catch and release. To many fish get injured.”

I think the folks that hang out on Ido or any fishing site for that matter become informed. Maybe not totally informed but informed enough to understand the difference between catch and release sturgeon fishing and say bobber fishing with a leech.

Maybe I’m giving the sturgeon fishing community too much credit. I thought we/they were doing a great job informing folks on the why and hows of successful C&R sturgeon fishing. After reading just a short portion of the comments I’ve come to realize we haven’t touched the surface of the fishing population.

Just a quick observation at 3 in the morning….

<sigh> Maybe we need a test and a sticker? )

A majority of the population in this state couldn’t pick-out a Sturgeon out of a group of Bass, Sunfish & Pike. These are the same people funding the DNR and serving on the shoreowner boards.

Brian I think that there are two distinct different types of fishing sites that attract people of similar views. 1. Education – Of coarse looking at IDO, the vast majority of members are looking to learn and share. Its easier to gain insight on a topic and continue learning by seeking out real information to enhance or increase your knowledge. 2. Brag boards. Can’t really say that its unfortunate that there is so many on the internet. Just like any home, you need to have a trash can. They attract people that predominately seek the attention of what they caught and give trolls the means to belittle others. Obviously we don’t want them on this site. Though they do need the education, they are the ones that will never invest in themselves to learn.

C&R practices have come a long ways, yet they have a long ways to go. It doesn’t matter what species of fish you apply it to. You will have a segment of the general population that won’t accept the facts and they live with a level of greed and entitlement. I’m every bit in favor of harvesting some fish – Lord knows I love eating a variety of pike, walleyes, and panfish. But just imagine what things would be like by now if everyone practiced catch and eat.
I take this topic a bit personal because I can attest to the affects it has. A couple of my favorite small lakes are destroyed. A few individuals grossly over harvested and the balance of predator/prey is gone. I will never see these lakes restored back to their glory in my lifetime. My daughters will never again enjoy the fishery we once had.
So Kudos to those that have contributed and shared in their knowledge. I believe that as anglers learn to catch more and enjoy catching more quality fish, they are inclined to give back. Both in what they know, and what they do with each fishery they enjoy.

I think the folks that hang out on Ido or any fishing site for that matter become informed.

For the most part these boards have a healthy dialogue that allows the info to flow, hence the education. Some other sites don’t moderate to the level of IDO so its the wild west on some and become ugly back and forths. Reason why IDO is superior.

Those comment pages are hilarious, its sad to see how many true internet trolls there are online and they just go for it. I like to think they don’t represent the whole, but they can get quite discouraging at times.

Funny you mention that FBRM. I was just talking about that very subject last weekend!

“I thought it was the law to toss them on shore”….

So true Randy. Sturgeon might be a little different though. There is little or no mortality in catching a sturg, it’s all about how they are handled by humans while in the boat/shore. Gill holds mostly.

I think this site actually moderates itself more than anything. Other sites that are over-moderated have the same issues as the ones that don’t at all.

The trolls don’t get the same satisfaction here as they do on other sites where it is basically encouraged.

    Sorry for getting off topic.

I have to agree with MR. B. Gill.

Since the first of the year I can recall closing 2 threads…but my memory is short.

Just Dave has all but eliminated the spammers so deleting them is pretty much gone…knock on wood.

A lot of people on internet fishing sites are looking for the quick and easy answer… dang near the GPS coordinates to the hot fishing spots out there. They don’t really care to learn why the fish are in the hot spot, or how to find a new hot spot themselves. They just want to catch them now and move on to the next hot spot.

People on IDO are more into it for the long term, and don’t completely want your GPS Coordinates, but want to learn more about how/why the fish are biting here, and new ways to catch fish for years to come.

To sum it up, in my opinion: IDO is a fishing site for the long term fisherman. Other fishing sites are for the short term fisherman. I’ve learned a lot in the year or so that I’ve been on IDO and it’s expanded my fishing knowledge and skills, but also made me realize I got a long ways to go.

Just reading these threads makes me appreciate learning this way even more I kind of feel sorry for the instant gratification guys and gals on those other sites if you think about it they can never be truly happy “fishing” as we all are when we get time to be on the water they always need something that time out or it was a wasted trip and will claim “that lake has no fish” or “they can’t be caught”….. which I find sad but at least we all live the same montra here that learning a new technique or a new pattern thats repeatable is Happiness that sticks with us tell we grow old… Lol although I will hold myself to that standard of implimentation of past technique and patterns expecting to catch fish but if not that day there will be a next time and I will catch them then mrgreen Thanks again IDO for keeping the learning coming and creating such a down to earth place for us Fisherman to come tell the tales we all love to tell waytogo

Not anymore, due to the internet there are no longer any fish near any bridge.

    ^ LOL!

Dave there are too types of people in the world and on Ido.
    The givers
    The takers.

I guess there are some in between as well.

Ido has giving me so much that it would be impossible to pay it back. Now when I say that I’m referring to the platform itself but more so to the members that are willing to help the newbie.

Meaning no disrespect to my Dad but I thought he taught me everything there was to know about fishing. In reality, it was very little although a love for fishing and (at one time) hunting isn’t exactly a small thing either.

Still, learning everyday. I call my time on Ido “continuing education”.

It was the members of Ido that pointed out my view of this or that might not be correct. Someone was always here to answer a question, share an experience or just to laugh at a silly post of mine.

Who would have guessed seeing the bumper sticker on a wall at windmill marina could impact a families live so much?

Sharing a boat first with Mike W, then many many others. Flatheads, Sturgeon and even walleyes bigger then I thought possible wouldn’t have been boated and released had it not been for Ido and it’s members.

    Pretty damn humbling actually.

Same here Brian and that’s one of the reasons I’ve been here for about 15 years or so. This site is as close to normal as any site can be and that’s probably because the people who come here see that’s the people who come here often are well mannered and its always been that way since Fish the River, I joined close to the time when it was ending.

Something I have noticed is people who post here are for the most part logical and think about what their saying, and also are considerate of what others say. Theres been a few growlers here off and on through the years but for the most part its been pretty well balanced and that’s why Myself and many others keep dialing in everyday. Very few times have I tuned in and seen someone in a real argument and its not hard to tell when those talks show up.

I can always depend on things going pretty well on almost any subject, and just like any site sometimes its hard to find an interesting subject to talk about. Then in a day or two someone chimes in with something interesting to talk about. For the guys and girls who come here its a pretty nice place to visit often and not have much to be concerned about and to relax.

As for those people that do not understand catch and release. They have never felt the power of a medium to large sturgeon. My father made the trip up to Rainy with me once and grumbled about not being able to bring meat home. After the first fish he never has brought up catch and release being pointless. Realizing that those same fish could be caught by my grandchildren some day is amazing.

As for closed threads I know I have been involved in at least one. Bowfishing kinda gets me riled up for the same reason killing sturgeon does.
