There’s fighting fish and there’s eating fish. You’ve listed one of each.
Tough call one is a very good fighter the other is like pulling in a small soaked pillow.Which one could that be,hmmm.
This time of year I love 3#s in all species. They seem to dig in a bit more and give that don’t want to come up walleye feel. Very fun!!
Smallies are the hands down choice in summer, no contest. I’m a want it to be a walleye guy at heart, but in the end you got to give respect where its due, i to the fight of smallies.
Smb for sure but river eyes do fight better than many may think. When water is too warm they can be super wimpy tho-
Nothing against a bass fight, especially small face, but I target a lot of shallow water walleye, 2′-10′, and they have something to prove in the shallow water, especially on the river, and especially through the ice. I like any 3#ers pulling, even mr. Drum.
A lot of assumptions and I think a lot has to do with the bite and the gear. I really don’t get all too fired up about the fight anymore. For me, its all about triggering the most aggressive bite. Since most of the time I am using medium and medium Lt gear on walleyes, I get a better thrill on eyes. I fish very little live bait and try to avoid fishing lame conditions. But when walleyes are up on the clam beds or rock bars and wanting to eat, I’ll take the eye/crankbait bite anytime over the “tick” of a bass
Randy, you hit the nail on the head for me. I fish walleye a lot. I think they are one of the weakest fighters and not really my favorite tasting fish.
But still, I fish for them a lot. I really like that thump and the hook set when they’re on an aggressive jig bite. I think that’s why love it so much.
As for bass, a 3 lb smallie beats them all. For largemouth, the frog slop top water bite is the only way I fish for them. The top water explosion and the Bill Dance hook set is what I love.

Well if your talking an even crank bait to crank bait bite then what?
Your comparing a plastic finesse bass bite to an eye crank bite then yes the walleye bite wins but only on the bite not the fight. Caught a ton of bass on the light gear during tough bites and that blows a walleye fight out of the water. We don’t need to downsize the size or the gear though like you talk about for it to feel like a challenging fight. Bass do that on the heavy gear all by themselves.
For the talk about walleyes in current, my guess is your comparing them to bass in lakes not the boat pulling Smallies that we typically find in the river?

Hmmmm a boat pullin smallie? Time to get the waders on, chits gettin deep in here.
Like I said…a lot of assumptions to be made. I’ve caught lame bass and very acrobatic bass. Had walleyes breech the surface to hit a crank and other come in like a wet rag.
You Bass fishing snobs are just as bad as us Walleye fishing snobs!LOL
I have seen walleyes fight just as hard and more than any bass of equal size and I can also say I have seen a bass fight just as hard and more than any walleye of equal size.
Maybe its just me but the time of year and the lake you are on can make a huge difference.
Just last week I went fishing on one of our local lakes and did very very well. During the process I caught 15-20 eyes and 4 small mouth. The small mouth hit very aggressive but came up like a soggy pair of old jeans. The walleyes had a very very small itty bitty bite but fought like a pit bull.
Next time out??? Who knows!IMHO
A 3lb northern or skies are a hell of a fight. But in the end any fish is fun because it’s a battle of man vs beast.
Although the walleye can be spunky…
If one assumes “ideal” conditions I think the more interesting question would be: A 3lb SMB or a 3lb Rainbow Trout? In terms of bulldog tenacity that wont quit the SMB gets it. In terms of running ability and pure acrobatic joy the Rainbow gets it.
If you want to feel a tug on the end of your rod go grab an old sock and turn the lights off
With that said…. I’d take a 2lb wiper over both.
I think there’s the first half of the fight and the second half. Second half for walleyes does turn into pulling in a wet sock. The second half of a smb fight though can be as good or better than the first half – they just do not give up !!

Walleye by far. Those dumb bass you just skip across the top of the water and then throw ’em up on shore with the carp and sheephead.
ACTUALLY it’d depend. You talking Small or Large Mouth bass? You talking river walleye or lake walleye ? There’s too many variables to compare.

Like!
How hard do you think a 3# zebra mussel would fight? Just lake zebra mussels.
