What Extension Cord Do You Use For Your Onboard Charger

I’m installing a 20 amp three bank charger, do I really need a 10 gauge cord? Probably a stupid question, but I’m just curious what you guys use. Thanks.

How did you determine that a 10 gauge cord is appropriate? That seems a bit overkill unless you are running 100 yards of cord.

Knowing that the output of the charger is 20 amps, tells you nothing in respect to the extension cord.

What determines the extension cord size is INPUT amps on the charger and the run length of the extension cord.

I use the yellow one in my garage that gets used for everything else. Seems to work for me wink . Heck if I know the size of it though.

I’m going to take a wild guess that you have a Pro-Sport 20 charger, here’s some cord guidelines that I found in one of thier manuals.

Hot Runr, thanks for that chart! Well I used the very scientific method of going to Menard’s, and reading the cord packages. The cords at 12g said they were rated for 15 amps, and the 10g was 20. I figured 10 was pretty heavy, and know next to nothing about electrical stuff, so that’s why I asked. Thanks guys!

You’re forgetting that the charger is putting out 20 amps at 12V (well, ~14.7 maybe), it’s not drawing 20 amps from your 120V circuit. The extension cords are talking about the amperage at 120 volts. A 20 amp charger only draws ~3 amps from the wall and that’s what you need to spec the extension cord for so, basically, any old cord will do unless you are going very long lengths.
