What Bait Caster?

I Have a MH XF St Croix Premier that I use primarily for trolling raps and bottom bouncers, and occasionally for casting for pike or bass. I had an el cheapo Gander reel on it that is burned out, and want to get something new and nicer for it. Budget is flexible if there is a huge difference in quality, but baitcasters are a whole new ballgame to me. Thoughts?

I just bought a Daiwa Tatula CT, a lot of positive reviews online for under 130$

I’d look for one with a flipping switch, it allows you let out line and then automatically engages when you take your thumb off the “button”

I will never own another bottom bouncer reel with out it!

That’s what I’ve been looking at based off of previous reviews, but the thread was a little dated so thought I’d start a new one.

You can get a CT down around $90 if you shop. Great reels.

I have the tatula CT and liked it so much I bought a Tatula SV. My favorite Bait casters hands down.

I just bought a quantum accurist baitcaster with flipping switch on Amazon for 79.99. Seems like a great reel.

I would suggest the Daiwa Tatula line in general.

If you aren’t casting really light lures (shadrap 4 etc), I wouldn’t go with the SV. The CT is their smaller form factor model, while there is also the 100 and 150 models. Find a size you like.

Another good route might be the Shimano Curado 200.

BTW, Joes sporting goods has their spring sale on – 20% off fishing stuff this week.

Tatula SV… The Tackle Trap has them for $149 with the code BBC10. I now have three. Selling Curados to make room.

I’m not real sure I’m cool with another Matt M on this board but at least you have good taste in reels!

I run the same reels….love them. For a dummy like me the switch is great.

Overall, really nice fit/finish and a great blend of features.

-The T-wing system reduces the amount of friction on line as it’s unspooling during the cast. Daiwa does a great job with their magnetic brake system (I think it’s the best out there). They also have a very light spool – easier casting with lighter weights. All of the line will share these features.

-The Tatula CT is the smaller form factor –
-The type R is supposedly “tuned” – slightly better bearings IIRC.
-The Tatula SV is the entry level option for the SV spool. This spool is designed to give better casting with light weights. You can set it to be VERY backlash resistant – even with light weights casting into the wind.

Thanks for all the comments! Sounds like I will be Tatula shopping, now whether to get the CT, SV or 100/150…
