I’ll be running the Hornady Leverevolution 140grain bullets this year, upgrading from the 125 grain JHP Remingtons I used last year.

October 30, 2014 at 10:20 am #1468520Some great guns with some great stories being mentioned in these posts. I especially like your stories, Cougareye and Nicholas.
I’m a softie for guns with great stories. I think this is one of the things that makes the hunting tradition so special, the guns live on and on and so the stories live on with them.

November 2, 2014 at 8:42 pm #1469532270 WSM in a Remington Model Seven. 140 gr. Nosler Accubond (Fed Prem.) Leupold VX-3 1.75 – 6
November 3, 2014 at 6:10 am #1469586Shot my first deer way back in about ’77 with a savage mod 99 lever action in .358 win. Shortly after that, a neighbor sold me a marlin 30-30 I put a scope on it this year, so I would like to kill a deer with that gun. The sporterized Springfield 30-06 will also be in the mix, depending on which stand I will be in. 150gr old school Winchester silver tips work well in that gun, I have killed over a dozen deer with that gun/bullet combination and never had one go further than I could see from the stand.
November 3, 2014 at 9:28 am #1469676If I Don’t get my win. model 100 in .284 sighted in I will take a model 100 in 30-06 for stand hunting. If I participate in any drives I will use one of my 94’s in .30-30
November 3, 2014 at 9:47 am #1469690I don’t know if I’ll get into the woods with a rifle this year but if it happens I’ll probably have my Weatherby .22-250 with 60gr. Nosler Partitions. Probably a little controversial but I’ve never had a deer run more than 20 yards, so if it isn’t broke why fix it.

Modern bullets change everything.
My father had always considered the .243 to be marginal (to say it kindly) for deer. Until he shot one with my .243 and a 85 grain Nosler BT. According to him, it fell over in its tracks without moving another forward step. Speed kills, when married to the right bullet.
While I don’t think all .223 chamberings are suitable for deer, the .22-250’s speed and ability to handle the heaviest bullets make it a horse of a different color.

November 3, 2014 at 11:24 am #1469742270 is a good round. How’s that 25-06?
I’ve always had a thing for the .25-06. There’s a reason why it has long been considered the King of the Pronghorn rifles. Flat + fast. Just a tremendously versatile offering for mid-size game and wide open spaces.
While newer offerings may have the advantage of offering similar or even better performance in a short action, there will be .25-06s taking antelope, mule deer, and any varmint that happens to get in the crosshairs long, long into the future.

November 6, 2014 at 1:33 pm #1470808For years I carried grandpa’s 740 Woodsmaster in .308win. He gave it to me just before he passed away and I’ve been fortunate to put my own stamp of amazing memories into it. However, after a fall in the woods I realized that if I ever broke the stock or anything I’d be really upset that the gun is no longer the way it was. So it’s been retired……. to shots from the porch only! I have plenty of rifles that need their own histories written and I intend to use a selection of them every season.
This year my son will carry a Tikka T3 SS in .308win bedded in a custom Boyd’s thumbhole stock, shooting Fusion 165gr. rounds.
I intend to bring the 750 Woodsmaster in .243 and the 740 Woodsmaster in .308win for sure. Undecided if I’ll bring the Marlin MXLR .308ME or the Marlin 336C in .30-30 or the 20ga Sabot Ithaca 37 DeerSlayer. All are ready to go and…….. just so I can have something unique for Grouse’s entertainment, I’m tempted to pack the Marlin 1894 in .41mag.November 6, 2014 at 6:10 pm #1470853Depending on which stand I pick it will be my Savage 10 .243 100 grainers ahead of IMR 7828 pushing 3100 fps. or this. 1881 Marlin 45-70.
